New CBE Publication! This study aimed to create a CuO/ZnCo₂O₄/CNTs composite for degrading pollutants in wastewater. Researchers synthesized CuO, ZnCo₂O₄, and their composites using sol-gel, co-precipitation, and sonication methods. They tested these materials for their ability to degrade crystal violet dye and other pollutants. The key finding was that the CuO/ZnCo₂O₄/CNTs composite showed the highest degradation efficiency, removing 87.7% of the dye. This process offers a highly effective method for treating wastewater, addressing significant environmental pollution issues. Dr Masoumeh Zargar, Edith Cowan University's engineering lecturer has developed high-tech membrane filters to remove dangerous microplastics from aquatic and wastewater treatment systems. This new technology is set to change how water is treated worldwide. Dr Zargar, also an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow, said the new membrane filtering technique can potentially change how water is treated worldwide, starting here in Australia. "We change the membrane structure, composition and surface properties and create more resilient environmentally friendly materials that won’t be clogged or damaged by microplastics and can remove them efficiently," Dr Zargar explained. I am delighted to share my recent PhD paper published in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering (JECE) via collaborative research between The University of Manchester and the University of Liverpool. #Boron #contamination in water is a growing environmental concern due to its harmful effects on human #health, #agriculture, and #aquatic ecosystems. Even at low concentrations, boron can cause severe health issues, such as reproductive and developmental problems, and it can also affect crop yields and soil quality. Due to its chemical properties, existing water treatment technologies often struggle to remove boron efficiently. In this study, we proposed novel #UiO67-#biochar composites that offer a promising solution, achieving high boron efficiency while being cost-effective and sustainable. However, as boron contamination persists globally, especially in regions relying on irrigation and industrial discharge, scalable and durable solutions like our initiative can provide a promising solution for practical applications. I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest review paper, "MOF-Biochar Composites for Environmental Protection and Pollution Control", in Bioresource Technology. This research, a collaboration between the The University of Manchester and the University of Liverpool, explores the innovative potential of Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-biochar composites as sustainable solutions for addressing pressing environmental challenges. These advanced composites combine the high adsorption capacity of MOFs with the stability and eco-friendliness of biochar. This paper reviews their fabrication methods, adsorption mechanisms, and applications, highlighting their ability to efficiently remove hazardous pollutants, #dyes, heavy metals, and #pharmaceuticals from various media. Under the direction of CEE professor, Dr. Pedro Alvarez, the Rice WaTER Institute is at the forefront of pioneering nanotechnology to ensure communities across the globe have access to clean water. "Rice is uniquely positioned to take on these challenges thanks to decades of research that have culminated in the creation of two vital entities working to make our water safer across the world: the Water Technologies Entrepreneurship and Research (WaTER) Institute, launched in January 2024 and its new Rice PFAS Alternatives and Remediation Center (R-PARC). “Across the world, we’re seeing more serious contamination by emerging chemical and biological pollutants, and climate change is exacerbating freshwater scarcity with more frequent droughts and uncertainty about water resources,” Alvarez said. “The Rice WaTER Institute is growing research and alliances in the water domain that were built by our NEWT Center, which was very productive in launching startups and training about 200 graduate students to address water security concerns.” Read more about Rice's WaTER Institute: https://lnkd.in/gJeXy_zk

Hydrochar as a bio-based adsorbent for heavy metals removal: A review of production processes, adsorption mechanisms, kinetic models, regeneration and reusability . Abstract The spread of heavy metals throughout the ecosystem has extremely endangered human health, animals, plants, and natural resources. Hydrochar has emerged as a promising adsorbent for removal of heavy metals from water and wastewater. Hydrochar, obtained from hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, owns unique physical and chemical properties that are highly potent in capturing heavy metals via surface complexation, electrostatic interactions, and ion exchange mechanisms. This review focuses on removing heavy metals by hydrochar adsorbents from water bodies. The article discusses factors affecting the adsorption capacity of hydrochars, such as contact time, pH, initial metal concentration, temperature, and competing ions. Literature on optimization approaches such as surface modification, composite development, and hybrid systems are reviewed to enlighten mechanisms undertaking the efficiency of hydrochars in heavy metals removal from wastewater. The review also addresses challenges such as hydrochar regeneration and reusability, alongside potential issues related to its disposal and metal leaching. Integration with current water purification methods and the significance of ongoing research and initiatives promoting hydrochar-based technologies were also outlined. The article concludes that combining hydrochar with modern technologies such as nanotechnology and advanced oxidation techniques holds promise for improving heavy metal remediation. Overall, this comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights to guide future studies and foster the development of effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly heavy metal removal technologies to ensure the attainment of safer drinking water for communities worldwide. . Remediation of Cationic Dye Using Haloxylon Salicornicum 💧 Nature’s Gift to Wastewater Treatment 🌱 Water pollution is one of the greatest challenges of our time. In our new study, published in Journal of Molecular Liquids (Q1), we explored the use of Haloxylon salicornicum (HS), a natural and cost-effective adsorbent, to remove harmful dyes from wastewater. 🔍 What’s New? With a mesoporous structure and a surface area of 85.23 m²/g, HS efficiently removes crystal violet dye under optimal conditions. We combined experimental findings with molecular modeling to understand the adsorption mechanism in detail. 🌍 Why It Matters? Dr. Jaidev Kaushik, Assistant Professor, Department of chemistry, has achieved a significant milestone with the publication of his pioneering research in the prestigious journal Langmuir (ACS). The paper, titled “Graphene Incorporated Sugar-derived Carbon Aerogel for Pyridine Adsorption and Oil-Water Separation,” explores innovative ways to address environmental pollution through graphene-based materials. Dr Kaushik's research introduces a carbon aerogel derived from sugar and enhanced with graphene, demonstrating exceptional efficiency in adsorbing pyridine, a harmful organic compound, and separating oil from water. This breakthrough material offers a sustainable solution for tackling water pollution and waste management, with wide-ranging industrial applications. The study highlights the aerogel’s impressive recyclability, showing that it can be reused for up to 10 cycles, making it a cost-effective alternative for environmental remediation. The research's practical applications extend to the successful recovery of crude oil from seawater, promoting the circular economy and sustainable practices in pollution control. I am pleased to share that our recent research that was just published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A (RSC) on environmental-friendly anti-biofouling coating based on slippery liquid-infused surfaces (https://lnkd.in/dgR2zXbN). The research was jointly performed with Prof. Nicolas Vogel from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. It is well-known that biofouling, caused by the attachment of micro- and macroorganisms, increases the fuel consumption of ships and compromises aquatic infrastructure, especially by microbial-induced corrosion. Conventional anti-fouling strategies often rely on the release of toxic substances that act non-specifically on marine species destroying aquatic life. Liquid-infused coatings offer an alternative strategy, which has shown promising anti-fouling performance in maritime settings. Here, we focus on freshwater systems and investigate the performance of a set of recently developed liquid-infused coatings with low environmental impact based on sustainable and non-toxic materials and energy-efficient fabrication. We combined field studies at two freshwater bodies in Bavaria, Germany with laboratory experiments focusing on corrosion and microbial attachment. Our results indicate that conventional, hard coatings fail to prevent the formation of biofilms, while both industrial- and developed coatings based on liquid-infused technologies show a reduction in general biofouling, mussel attachment, corrosion rates, as well as the attachment of Thiobacillus thioparus and Pseudomonas fluorescens, organisms known to cause microbial-induced corrosion.
