[COMST Survey] Navigating the Road Ahead: A Comprehensive Survey of Radio Resource Allocation for Vehicle Platooning in C-V2X Communications Technological advancements in sensing, communication, and control technologies are setting the stage for a transformative era in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Now, with higher levels of automation and interconnectivity, the role of communication technology has never been more critical. In this trend, Cellular Vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communications have become an indispensable enabler for future ITS, contributing to road safety and traffic efficiency. As an advanced V2X use case of New Radio V2X (NR-V2X), vehicle platooning enables a group of vehicles with similar driving intentions to move cooperatively and maintain a small inter-vehicle distance, substantially enhancing road capacity. However, the increase in road capacity will in turn lead to a higher vehicular network density, thereby posing significant challenges in achieving higher spectrum efficiency required to support a high-density vehicular network. Consequently, Radio Resource Allocation (RRA) has become a crucial consideration in supporting the evolving communication requirements of advanced V2X use cases like vehicle platooning. In this context, the paper titled “Navigating the Road Ahead: A Comprehensive Survey of Radio Resource Allocation for Vehicle Platooning in C-V2X Communications” by Chenyu Yang, Chiew Foong Kwong, David Chieng, Pushpendu Kar, Kok-Lim Alvin Yau, and Yusen Chen presents a toturial and survey. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of RRA tailored specifically to the context of vehicle platooning. It presents an overview of fundamental concepts, including V2X communications, vehicle platooning, and RRA standards, which is followed by an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art, categorized based on the underlying communication technologies, RRA modes, and coverage conditions. By analyzing the existing literature, this paper identifies several key research challenges and potential opportunities, offering insightful guidance for shaping future research in this field.
