As a member of the Lumbee Tribe (and like many other Native Americans), #Thanksgiving is a troubling day. It’s not the jubilant breaking of bread ceremony that has been painted by America for centuries. In reality, it’s a day of mourning and remembrance of the brutality our Indigenous ancestors faced. However, for non-Native folks, there lies an opportunity for you all to acknowledge the history and horrors of colonization and meet us in the middle on the path of healing and reconciliation. I cannot help but think back to my YES! Media article in collaboration with my good friend Hilary Giovale. Together, we discuss and build a roadmap for healing—thus reframing the narrative in truth. So today, I urge you all to use these tips provided at the dinner table to “reject colonial divides and create genuine mutual understanding.”
