Exciting advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology often hinge on innovations within the components powering them. A recent work published in Eletrônica de Potência (Open Journal of Power Electronics) focuses on enhancing the efficiency of dual active bridge (DAB) converters tailored for EV on-board chargers (OBC). Using an optimization algorithm, this study precisely identifies the best parameters—such as the inductor turns, transformer gap length, and primary and secondary winding turns—to maximize efficiency and minimize power losses. This approach ultimately led to a DAB converter prototype achieving over 97% efficiency—a notable benchmark for EV applications! At the Flanders Make Symposium, we were excited to present our latest work on Integrated Motor Drives for Industrial Applications 💡 In most industrial setups, separate power electronic inverters are used to drive motors, requiring skilled commissioning and increasing costs. These systems often suffer from electromagnetic interference and transmission line effects, limiting flexibility and efficiency. With our integrated solution, the power electronic inverter is built directly into the motor enclosure. This approach delivers a plug-and-play motor drive solution with minimal commissioning effort. By eliminating the external inverter, the solution reduces the overall volume by more than 50%, doubling the power density. The integration also eliminates EMI and cable-related issues, enabling more flexible motor placement while leveraging high-efficiency SiC components for enhanced performance. During our demo, we compared a standard motor with an external drive to our integrated motor drive, showcasing the differences in performance and design. A teardown of the integrated motor revealed the innovative design behind this integrated solution.
