A new report from the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs has put a spotlight on the incredible contributions of First Nations businesses to Australia’s economy. With $16.1 billion in revenue, $4.2 billion in wages paid, and over 116,000 people employed, these enterprises are key drivers of economic and social value - creating approximately $4.41 in economic and social value for every dollar of revenue spent. Yet, despite this success, systemic barriers - such as restricted access to finance, lack of institutional trust, and limited opportunities to leverage land for economic purposes, continue to hinder their full potential. The report calls for transformative change across government, financial institutions, and investors, urging all stakeholders to support First Nations communities through strategic policy shifts, improved funding mechanisms, and strengthened cultural property protections. Last week the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs released a report on the economic self-determination and opportunities for First Nations people. The results show how much value First Nations enterprise creates in Australia, yet how undervalued they are in Australia. More opportunities for First Nations businesses leads to positive outcomes for the whole community. Let's also get behind our mob in Canberra as a community and support First Nations enterprise, especially in the lead up to and through the holidays. https://lnkd.in/geBs-c8D

👋 The new European Commission has just started to work and important #challenges and #objectives will be addressed. We are delighted with the inclusion of #SocialEconomy and the full implementation of the Social Economy Action Plan in Mrs. Roxana Minzatu’s final Mission Letter. However, the Social Economy Action Plan by itself is not enough, it needs a coordinated approach of different policies and objectives as well as the means to accompany the deeds. So we’ve done the math 🤓 : ▶️ Knowing that the EU #budget will not increase (at least not right away) + new objectives (like defense, innovation & competitivity) have joined the previous ones (that is green & digital fair transition) = the EU money directly allocated to social economy will necessarily decrease. ▶️ When we add to this arithmetic the fact many MS will have to undergo austerity measures, we can rest assured that the first cuts will happen, as always, in social matters (#health, #education, #sports, #social services, #minorities...) All sectors in which SE plays a crucial role. All cuts that will affect the parts of SE that heavily depend on public spending and that support the wellbeing of society. ▶️ The social issues are not decreasing, rather the contrary and investments are needed to face the major economic and social EU challenges. These are serious threats not only to SE but largely to the EU prosperity and wellbeing of its populations. Without budget support the Social Economy Action Plan will fail to deliver. Political and operational support from both the EC & EP are crucial. Only with coordinated policies and adapted means can Social Economy contribute to solving Europe’s most pressing challenges (such as housing, energy, accessible healthy food & care). For all these reasons it is important to coordinate EU policies linked to SE, by incorporating this ecosystem transversally in all EU Industrial, economic and social policies, among many others. In a moment when Social Economy is needed more than ever accross the EU, we need investment, funding and national budgets that reflect a coordinated and holistic approach to a prosperous EU. 💪 🔥 AIM - Association Internationale de la Mutualité/International Association of Mutuals CECOP CEPES Confederación Empresarial Española de la Economía Social ConcertES ESS France (La Chambre française de l'économie sociale et solidaire) FEBEA - European Federation of Ethical and Alternative Banks and Financiers Eurodiaconia Diesis Network ENSIE NETWORK The Wheel Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association ADV Romania TechSoup Coompanion Microfinance Centre European Microfinance Network REVES - EUROPEAN NETWORK OF CITIES AND REGIONS FOR THE SOCIAL ECONOMY

The dynamics of politics in Papua New Guinea remain unpredictable. Paita is the alternate PM candidate from the Sanctuary Camp. Resignation of Allan Bird as Alternate PM Nominee Allan Bird, the former Alternate Prime Minister nominee, has announced his relinquishment of the nomination due to lack of confidence in the government's ability to address the country's challenges. Bird cited dissatisfaction with the government's decisions and its impact on the populace as the primary reason for his withdrawal. He expressed gratitude to the 18 members of Parliament who initially supported him and acknowledged the leadership of Hon Rainbo Paita, who now leads the opposition. Current Political Dynamics Rainbo Paita has emerged as the new Alternate Prime Minister nominee for the opposition, following extensive meetings among opposition members. The opposition, despite recent defections, remains determined to file a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister James Marape's administration. Prime Minister Marape asserts confidence in his government's stability and dismisses the opposition's actions as part of the democratic process. The upcoming parliamentary session today (28th of May 2024) is expected to be crucial, with both camps preparing for a showdown. Political Instability and Economic Challenges Papua New Guinea has a history of political instability, with frequent changes in government affecting policy implementation and economic planning. The recent power tussle, including defections from the government to the opposition camp, has further destabilized the political landscape. Economic challenges such as a weakening currency, high inflation, fuel shortages, and unemployment exacerbate the situation. Despite these challenges, the Asian Development Bank projects positive economic growth driven by the mining sector, though concerns remain about foreign exchange restrictions and power disruptions. Outlook The political situation in Papua New Guinea remains fluid, with potential implications for the economy and governance. Stakeholders, including investors and trade partners, closely monitor developments for stability and policy certainty. The outcome of the parliamentary session will likely shape the country's political direction and economic trajectory in the coming months. #politics #pngpolitics #vonc2024 #panguparty #marape #paita #alternateprimeminister #pngparliament #pngleadership #democracy

👋 It’s been more than 9 months of campaign to make sure #SocialEconomy stays high in the EU agenda, and today we are 9 days away from the final decision of Conference of Presidents as to which intergroups will be selected. We take the opportunity to showcase the video students made of the conference we organized last October to show how SE supports the #EU in the priorities set out by the new Commission. It was a great success with more than 150 attendees from the social economy actors, from the EC as well as EP. This conference gave us trust in the role SE will have in this EU mandate. 👀 May the images speak for themselves 🔥 🔥 https://lnkd.in/dAjegkKU AIM - Association Internationale de la Mutualité/International Association of Mutuals CECOP CEDAG - European Council of Associations of General Interest CEPES Confederación Empresarial Española de la Economía Social ConcertES ESS France (La Chambre française de l'économie sociale et solidaire) FEBEA - European Federation of Ethical and Alternative Banks and Financiers Forum Terzo Settore Eurodiaconia Diesis Network ENSIE NETWORK The Wheel Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association ADV Romania TechSoup Coompanion Microfinance Centre European Microfinance Network REVES - EUROPEAN NETWORK OF CITIES AND REGIONS FOR THE SOCIAL ECONOMY AMICE Mutuals Social Economy Ukraine

The collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous finance leaders is essential for fostering a robust Canadian economy. By working together, these leaders can share valuable insights and strategies, ultimately leading to innovative financial solutions that benefit all communities. This partnership not only enhances financial literacy but also creates opportunities for growth and development across various sectors. In a 2023 media release from the @ontariocofc, the OCC shares that, ‘The Indigenous economy is strong and growing. Indigenous businesses contribute nearly $50 billion annually to Canada’s GDP, and there are over 75,000 Indigenous-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in Canada.’ Indigenous communities possess unique knowledge and perspectives that can significantly contribute to the overall economic landscape. When non-Indigenous finance leaders engage with Indigenous counterparts, they gain a deeper understanding of cultural values and sustainable practices that can lead to more effective business models. This exchange of ideas promotes inclusivity and drives economic reconciliation, benefiting both parties and the broader economy. As Canada moves towards a more equitable future, the collaboration between these finance leaders becomes increasingly vital. By learning from one another, they can address historical disparities and create a more resilient economic framework. Together, they can pave the way for a prosperous future that honours Indigenous contributions while fostering economic growth for all Canadians. The urgency to advance economic reconciliation is both a moral and an economic imperative. James Marape recently delivered a stirring call to action, urging all Papua New Guineans to work relentlessly over the next 20 years, starting in 2025, to transform the nation into a high-income economy and shift from being an exporter of raw resources to a manufacturer. Speaking upon his return from the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, where he addressed world leaders, Prime Minister Marape emphasised the ambitious vision he presented at the global stage: Papua New Guinea will rise as a higher- income nation by 2045, driven by a robust manufacturing economy. “To make this leap from exporting raw resources to building a manufacturing-based economy, we must secure critical enablers like affordable and reliable electricity, accessible internet, and vital infrastructure such as ports and jetties. We need to reorganise our towns and cities, revamp our education system to prepare our people for industry-specific roles, and ensure our health facilities are prepared for this transformation,” Prime Minister Marape said. “This will not happen overnight, but the foundation must be laid now. In the next 20 years, divided into four critical phases of five years each, we must chart a course towards achieving this vision. By the time PNG turns 70 in 2045, we must break free from the constraints of being a low-income nation and fully embrace our future as a high-income, thriving economy. I made this commitment to the world at the UNGA, and it is a commitment we must all work towards.” Prime Minister Marape called upon all citizens—public servants, ministers, community leaders, and the people—to join hands in realising this national vision. “As Prime Minister, my role is to set the vision, but it is the collective efforts of our people that will make it a reality. We must work together, harder than ever before, to build a better, more prosperous Papua New Guinea,” he said. Prime Minister Marape paid tribute to the legacy of late Sir Michael Somare, whose Vision 2050 laid the groundwork for PNG’s path toward joining the ranks of the world’s top 50 nations. “If we work diligently over the next 20 years, we will inch closer to this dream that Sir Michael had when he first articulated the Eight-Point Plan in 1975 and later Vision 2025 in 2010, which I have upheld since assuming office in 2019,” Prime Minister Marape said.
