Sometimes I wonder whether to charge a single upfront fee for the project or go with an hourly rate. So far, here’s what’s worked for me: if the project scope is clear, I set an upfront price. But if things are a bit vague, I stick to an hourly rate—it gives both me and the client some flexibility. 2️⃣ Boundaries Are Key I’ve learned (the hard way) that setting boundaries is crucial. When you’re freelancing, it’s easy to feel like you have to be “on” all the time, but I’m realizing that burnout is real. Blocking out time for myself is now non-negotiable. 3️⃣ Finding Clients Is Tough! Honestly, the biggest struggle so far has been finding clients consistently. I’m still experimenting, but joining freelancing groups and reaching out to people in my network has helped. 4️⃣ Celebrate Every Win 🎉 Every “yes” from a client, every project completed—it’s all worth celebrating! A while ago we discussed about freelancing vs employment. Today lets dive into freelancing, according to my own understanding. Freelancing is like being your own boss. Instead of working for a company, you work for yourself and take on different projects for different clients. It's a bit like being a one-person show, you get to choose what projects you work on, when you work, and how much you charge for your services. But freelancing isn't all sunshine and rainbows. It can be tough sometimes, especially when you're just starting out. You have to hustle to find clients, manage your time effectively, and make sure you're delivering high-quality work every time. But despite the challenges, freelancing can be incredibly rewarding. You have the freedom to work from anywhere, pursue projects that interest you, and set your own schedule. I am often asked about how to become a freelancer. From my experience, there are two types of people who consider freelancing: ▶ Those who are looking for personal growth after outgrowing their old jobs ▶ Those who are in-between jobs and considering both freelancing and full-time options. Usually, those who are seeking personal growth are more successful in the long run. ▶ The first rule of freelancing is that you need to really want it. The best freelancers are usually not interested in taking on corporate jobs beyond contracting. While there are good exceptions in the second category, they are not as common. ▶ Starting anything new is challenging and requires consistency and patience. Doing things half-heartedly will only get you half-hearted results. Freelancing is essentially an entrepreneurial role. ▶ The first year is always about "trying it out," and you will find yourself on a steep learning curve. Many of your hypotheses and dreams will unravel, and you will come to realize that the path is quite different from what you thought. However, you will also discover cool new things. ▶ During your first year, you will likely take on any work that comes your way, but it's important to keep your focus on your "why." What is the grander direction that you want to take? ▶ You will start finding your niche, what you're really good at, and which tools clients appreciate in your toolbox. ▶ With a couple of clients, you will play to your strengths and start learning new skills too. Upskilling is one of the best parts of the freelance journey, and you will adjust to your "ecological locker." However, to start with, you need to be passionate and committed. Becoming a successful solopreneur takes dedication. As my friend and fellow entrepreneur DAVID WEBSTER once said, "it's not a principle if it doesn't hurt sometimes." So when making the decision to become a freelancer, ask yourself if you're a black belt in what you do. If the answer is yes, then you're likely to do well on your own. If you're not sure whether freelancing is for you, then it's probably not for you. The Time I Almost Quit Freelancing, And Why I Didn't. Freelancing - It can be amazing, right? Total freedom, setting your own hours, being your own boss. But let's be real, there are also days – maybe even weeks – where you just want to chuck your laptop out the window. Been there, done that (almost). For me, it was a brutal combo of Losing clients and work Overload that made even the smallest task feel like climbing Mount Everest in flip-flops. The never-ending hunt for new clients was starting to feel like a wacky game show & the lack of a clear path forward felt like a giant middle finger from the freelance gods. Seriously, should I just quit? (Every Brain Cell asking the same question) But Here's the thing: I didn't. And here are 3 things really made a difference: 1. Finding My Freelancer Squad: Connecting with other freelancers online and in person was a lifesaver. Suddenly, I wasn't alone in this crazy freelancing world. Venting about struggles and Exchanging tips with people who "get it" was a huge boost. 2. Redefining the "Win": Forget the endless hustle. I shifted my focus to balance and sanity. This meant setting boundaries, saying no to projects that weren't a good fit, and actually taking care of myself (shocking, I know). 3. Remembering Why I Started: I took a step back and re-evaluated my niche. Focusing on projects I truly enjoyed rekindled the spark that got me into freelancing in the first place. The only advice you need to start freelancing is to have the guts to take on that project even if you do not feel prepared. Let me explain 👇 As a self-taught and with no working experience I jumped into freelancing in 2022 and barely found a freelancing opportunity. When that arose I was afraid I couldn't do it, because it was a complex food delivery app. Haven't built one before to know how to do it. Then I switched up my mindset by saying I could do it and even if I failed at least I tried. Guess what I did that app and my self-esteem crashed out of the sky. The lesson is to try your best. A steady paycheck, benefits, and the satisfaction of contributing to a larger project are compelling perks. You'll always know what’s on your plate for the next day, and having colleagues nearby can be a great source of inspiration and learning. It’s a fit if you: Need financial stability. Enjoy working in a team and learning from others. Value clear processes and structured workflows. If you’re all about freedom and creativity Freelancing means total control over your projects, clients, and schedule. But it also means wearing multiple hats: researcher, designer, accountant, marketer, and sales manager all at once. It’s for you if you: Feel confident in your skills and know how to grow clients flow. Want to manage your own time. Are prepared for slower periods (and know how to save for them). How to figure out what’s right for you? The best way is trying both. Start with employment to gain solid experience, then move to freelancing if you feel drained by company life. There is an alternative: take on small freelance projects while staying employed to test the waters. Or the other way around. Work part-time in a stable job and dedicate the rest of your time to freelance projects. This hybrid approach will help you discover your true calling without dramatic shifts. The most important thing is to be open to experimenting and listening to yourself. Choose what makes you feel fulfilled on your journey.

The moment that changed everything for me. Here is the truth about freelancing. It is tough. For 10 years, I worked in the corporate world, where my work was always reviewed and guided by my seniors.
