Wildland Fire Management 🔥 Fire is essential to forests, but today’s wildfires are more frequent and severe, threatening forests, wildlife, and communities. What’s driving this crisis? 1️⃣ Longer fire seasons due to climate change. 2️⃣ High fuel loads from past land management practices. The solution: Restoration. By thinning overgrown forests and using controlled burns, we can reduce wildfire risks, restore ecosystems, and protect communities. Together, we can build healthier, more resilient forests. Today, we come together to celebrate our planet and take collective action to protect and restore the world. This year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” focuses on the urgent need to revive degraded lands, combat desertification, and build resilience against drought. Together, we can restore our lands, stop desertification, and build resilience against drought. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a healthier planet. Let's pledge to protect and restore our environment for the benefit of all living beings and future generations. #worldenviromentday #environment #Landrestoration #Droughtresilence #Desertification #GenerationRestoration

🌊 Mangroves: Nature's Coastal Defenders! 🌿 Did you know that mangroves can reduce flood depths by up to 70%, acting as a natural shield against storms and extreme weather events? Their dense root systems not only prevent coastal erosion but also serve as a vital buffer that protects vulnerable communities from flooding and storm surges. In an era of increasing climate uncertainty, investing in the conservation and restoration of mangroves is one of the most cost-effective solutions for safeguarding coastal regions. Let’s champion the power of nature-based solutions like mangroves for a more resilient and sustainable future! 🌱 #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #MangroveConservation #SustainableCoasts #Resilience

I am digging in on this comprehensive multi county forest plan coordinated by @AmericanForests to see how it might serve as a model for other western regions. Please share perspectives or insights here!
Did you catch CBS Evening News' recent feature on our restoration efforts in South Central Oregon? 🌲 This area has faced devastating impacts from large, severe wildfires. Together with the USDA Forest Service, Collins Pine Co., and other partners, we’re implementing a cutting-edge restoration plan to rebuild forests that can better withstand fire and climate challenges. The Fremont-Winema National Forest is just one example of the incredible work being done nationwide through the REPLANT Act to restore our national forests. Hear from our expert Brian Kittler on why climate-resilient reforestation is key to protecting these landscapes: https://lnkd.in/d9NRPTeJ

#Oregon's #wetlands are more than just marshes and swamps. They are a network of bogs, fens, and shallow waters that filter our water, prevent floods, and provide a haven for countless species of plants and animals. Here's why wetlands matter: 🔵 Crystal Clear Water: Wetlands act as nature's kidneys, filtering pollutants and sediments before they reach our rivers and streams, providing clean drinking water for communities across the state. 🔵 Flood Protection: During heavy rain and snowmelt, wetlands act like sponges, absorbing excess water and mitigating floods that threaten homes, businesses, and infrastructure. 🔵 Wildlife Paradise: Oregon's wetlands are a haven for countless species. From salmon and frogs to rare birds and pollinators, these ecosystems provide critical breeding grounds and habitat, ensuring the health and biodiversity of our state. 🔵 Climate Change Champions: Wetlands store vast amounts of carbon dioxide, helping to combat climate change and its devastating impacts. In the last few days of May, #AmericanWetlandsMonth, will you consider making a gift to The Wetlands Conservancy to keep us protecting one of Oregon's greatest assets? https://lnkd.in/egwMVjaB

🌊 When natural sponges disappear, ecological disasters appear. Some places have the power to store and release water like a sponge, protecting us from floods and severe droughts. But these ecosystems, like forests and wetlands, are at risk. 🌳 Want to make a difference? The climate emergency is fuelling flooding and other forms of extreme weather. Therefore, our rivers and the landscapes that surround them need to be ‘climate-ready’. In fact, rivers are crucial in our response to the climate emergency and are vital tools if we are to tackle more extreme, accelerated and intense periods of drought and flood and manage their impact on people and wildlife. As we are in the middle of ‘Flood Action Week’, we would like to highlight our ‘Rewilding the Rom’ project with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Through this collaborative project, we have reconnected the River Rom to its floodplain, developed a wetland and helped to transform the river into a healthy environment for wildlife, whilst reducing the flood risk for local residents, which is desperately needed in light of the climate emergency. Together, we have not only restored this reach of the River Rom, but also initiated change to create lasting positive environmental impacts for people and for biodiversity. We recognize #WorldEnvironmentDay under the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience." On this day, we reflect on the wise words by David Attenborough "We often talk of saving the planet, but the truth is that we must do these things to save ourselves. With or without us, the wild will return." Protecting the environment is not merely a voluntary act of service to the planet but a necessary effort toward self-preservation. Because at https://crestwood.co.ke/, #WeDeliver by fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

As the world observes the #WorldDaytoCombatDesertificationandDrought, we at CSI want to underscore the critical role of healthy land in our fight against climate change. With the growing threat of desertification and drought, we must collectively strive to protect our land and promote sustainable land management practices. The theme for this year's observance, "Restore Land, Secure Our Future," highlights the urgent need to restore degraded land and prevent further damage. This is essential not only for our environment but also for the livelihoods of millions who depend on it. As a community dedicated to climate action, let's use this opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of land restoration. Let's encourage and support initiatives that promote sustainable land management and conservation, ensuring a more resilient and secure future for generations to come. Join us in our commitment to #RestoreLand and create a greener, healthier planet for all. Together, we can make a difference! #WorldDaytoCombatDesertificationandDrought #ClimateAction #CombatDesertification #Drought #LandDegradation #SustainableLandManagement #UNCCD

Beaver can be an incredible nuisance when it comes to mature trees and infrastructure. That said, they are becoming a major tool in combating climate change. Take a look at the B.C. Wildlife Federation initiative of 10,000 wetlands where they are using beaver dams and beaver dam analogues (BDA's) to help build climate resilience throughout British Columiba Last spring, we petitioned the District of North Vancouver to consider not removing dams on lower MacKay Creek from May to October in light of our hotter, drier summers. According to Parks Canada beaver dams are known to benefit the environment through: - creating wetland habitat for other species including refugia for salmonids - increasing #biodiversity - improving water quality - storing water during droughts - minimizing flood risk and mitigating flood peaks We'll continue monitoring the results with salmon returns beginning but lower MacKay Creek was a summer oasis in 2024.
