In the year since Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center joined Wellstar, our team has advanced patient care to provide innovative treatment to the Central Savannah River Area. As an academic medical center, Wellstar MCG Health is able to offer new, groundbreaking diagnostic and treatment options. It was the first hospital in the area to offer the Galleri Test multi-cancer early detection blood test, which uses a single blood draw to detect more than 50 types of cancer. Our electrophysiology lab also became the first in Georgia to implant an extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (EV-ICD). This device treats people at risk for dangerous heart rhythms and life-threatening cardiac arrest. Learn more about how Wellstar is caring for the Augusta area at http://spr.ly/6042vSVj4.

Delray Medical is the first hospital in South Florida to enroll a patient in the PICASSO trial, aimed at improving management for stroke patients with tandem occlusions. Tandem occlusions occur when a stroke in the brain is accompanied by a narrowing or blockage in the neck artery, limiting blood flow to critical areas. The PICASSO trial compares two distinct treatment approaches: stenting the artery to keep it open or performing angioplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that uses a balloon to restore blood flow. The PICASSO National Steering Committee praised the team at Delray Medical Center for their dedication to advancing stroke care. Read more: https://bit.ly/4g0lJlF

If you watch football on TV, you might have seen it before: out of nowhere a seemingly healthy athlete collapses onto the field. This is how Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) strikes. Coronary artery anomalies (CAA), like anomalous aortic origin of coronary artery (AAOCA) and myocardial bridges (MB) are associated with Sudden Cardiac Death, with AAOCA being a leading cause of SCD in young athletes. But while the association is clear, the diagnosis and management of these conditions are not. Can patients even risk exercise after a diagnosis? Are the methods of diagnosis clear enough to merit ending an athlete’s career for good? If you’re interested the answers to these questions and learning more about CAA, join me and my colleagues as we host the 6th annual Coronary Artery Anomalies Symposium, December 5th – 7th. There we will discuss the challenges of diagnosing and managing these conditions, how to use advanced imaging modalities to accurately diagnose them, dig into the risk factors and more.
