Transitional care nurses can lead to better outcomes for older adult emergency department patients. A study published in Academic Emergency Medicine found that transitional nurse care in the emergency department was associated with decreased readmission of older adults during the index ED visit at two of three hospitals, with sustained reduction for the entire 30-day readmission window at one hospital. Do I Love Geriatrics Nursing? If you had asked me weeks ago, “Do you love geriatrics?” my answer would have been somewhat yes. But being recently posted to care for older adults in the geriatrics unit has given me a new perspective. Geriatric nursing is more than just providing care; it’s about understanding the unique needs of the elderly, preserving their dignity, and enhancing their quality of life. This posting has opened my eyes to the resilience and depth of older adults. Every patient carries a lifetime of stories, wisdom, and experiences. Listening to them, supporting them in their vulnerabilities, and celebrating their small victories has been both challenging and rewarding. Caring for older adults has taught me the value of holistic care—attending to their physical, emotional, and social needs. Though it comes with its own set of challenges, like managing chronic conditions and emotional moments, the opportunity to make even a small difference in their lives is incredibly fulfilling. So, do I love geriatrics now? Absolutely. This experience has given me a deeper appreciation for nursing and the unique privilege of caring for older adults.
