The Australian state of Victoria reported that 200,000 people signed up for mobile driver's licenses within the first 48 hours of their introduction last week. However, the rollout experienced a few bumps along the way as establishments discovered that the digital IDs do not work with their scanners. (Sounds like it's time for those pubs and clubs to switch to Socket Mobile's SocketScan S370 or SocketScan S550 readers!) cc: Biometric Update #mobileidentity #mobileid #mobilewallets #mobiledriverslicenses #mdl #digitalidentity #digitalid #digitalwallets #digitaldriverslicenses

Who did this? Seriously, who was responsible for this at the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles? I want to thank them. I live in New York and, to be honest, there aren’t many innovations coming from Uncle Sam that are getting my attention. This one is different. Showing your ID on your phone is a sneaky gamechanger - one of those lightbulb “why did this take so long to happen” type innovations. We’ve done our fair share of government work at The Gnar and we know how tricky it can be to make change. There’s a lot of risk aversion in that sector and it normally takes a smart, thoughtful, and tenacious leader to introduce something new like this. I know there’s a broader technology ecosystem that has to buy-in to get this to wide adoption (a verifier app, businesses actually using it, etc), but I can’t help but feel like this is a great step, and I’m proud of my home state for being a first mover. And I’m not joking - I’d love to find out who championed this in NY state, great work. #government #digitaltransformation #innovation #DMV https://lnkd.in/eGxASNkK

Victoria finally rolls out its Digital Driver’s Licences. It took a little while for Victoria to catchup to some of the more progressive States (the first conversations in VIC started in 2017), but it is finally rolling out its digital version of driver’s licences. No interoperable ISO compliance (proprietary QR codes only), no Verifiable Credentials, no sharing with OEM wallets, no biometric verification: the scope of the VIC DDL is not really pushing the envelope just yet. But it certainly follows the trend, while more is being done at Federal level to support interoperability for digital transactions (currently earmarked for stage 2 of the federal Digital ID roadmap). Unfortunately there is little work being done on the interoperability of the DDL themselves as a licence to drive across State borders, which is the frustrating bit… #digitalId #DDL #digitalwallet #australia

Mobile driver’s licenses are growing in popularity. They provide a fast, easy way to share identification without keeping track of a physical card. In a recent video, Indicio CTO Ken Ebert and VP of Business development James Schulte break down exactly what this technology is, how you can create mobile driver’s licenses with #verifiablecredentials, and the benefits provided by doing so. https://lnkd.in/gen7jRkA

IAM RoadSmart has just reported on a survey of 2,347 advanced motorists, covering their views on illegal mobile phone use whilst driving. Headlines were: 62% think driver distraction is a bigger problem than three years ago 80% think others' illegal phone use is a threat to their own safety 4% think the current £200 fine and six points is 'too harsh' 34% would like to see mobile phones confiscated from offenders These represent the views of road users who have an advanced driving qualification and should be considered amongst the safest of drivers and riders. We should listen to them. The report, which quotes Nicholas Lyes also references the new camera technology from Acusensus, which is currently being used across the UK with live enforcement taking place (not requiring HOTA). It also calls for a review of the fine levels, the introduction of high profile education campaigns and more training courses, relating to illegal mobile phone use when driving. “Ultimately, we need to break the cycle of phone addition once drivers get behind the wheel as it is a serious distraction that can have tragic results.” #visionzero #roadsafety https://lnkd.in/egaiauXt
