Building useful things means connecting to useful data... As a software developer, to build a useful application, you must compose data from many different sources.... You may have data payloads from 3rd party SaaS companies, internal legacy platforms, and from legacy vendors. Oh my! Further, to make data useful, you typically need to combine, chain, merge, trim and transform all of this data in other complex ways to provide the perfect payload for your front-end. So, at Canopy our platform supports securely connecting to many data types: static files, relational, document & vector DB connections, REST APIs, OpenAPI 3.0 (auto-gen) and streaming protocols: rpc & websocket. So... why should you care about APIs? Simple, the WORLD runs on them. I have seen multiple development efforts and integrations struggle and even fail because of issues with APIs. The technical team did not grasp the business needs, and the stakeholders did not understand the technical limitations of building/utilizing an API. If you are a non-technical person assisting with building an API, you can help by knowing (generally): 1. What you need the API to do (get data, delete a record, update or create a record). 2. What data is needed to do the action. Example: If you are deleting a record, you probably need enough information to identify that record. This could be a serial number, an ID value, or a combination of values. 3. What do you want the API to tell you back? In case of an error, are there specific error messages that the business side would find useful? In case of success, are there other data elements you want to be given back to you?
