Brewers, we need to talk about brewhouse efficiency 😬 Malted products can contribute to 10% of a brewery's total emissions, one of the largest single-product contributors to your carbon footprint. Naturally, there is an associated £ cost to it as well. Now, ask yourself, 'Is my brewery measuring brewhouse efficiency for every batch?' From my experience speaking at events, working with breweries and being in the industry for 10 years. The vast majority will answer that 'no' So why isn't every single brewer measuring, recording and reducing their biggest single product contributor to their carbon footprint? I see the roadblocks: 🌾 COA data usually is in paper format 🧮 The calculation is hard/labour-intensive to use 📃 Brew sheets containing key data are often on paper But here is some tough news you might not want to read. These are excuses, not reasons. Start off by digitalising your brew sheets is paramount to get better control of your process. And must be started immediately. You can still record on paper, but this must be uploaded to a spreadsheet before the end of the shift. COA data does primarily come on paper, which still irks me to this day, but it can be manually uploaded to your spreadsheet at relative ease. Finally, the calculation can be daunting, but I have made a free calculator for everyone to use. And if you want to understand it, DM me straight away.
