From California.com: Street art in Los Angeles transcends the traditional gallery space, bringing art to the public in a way that is accessible and unmediated. This democratization of art allows for a unique intersection of voices, from renowned international artists to local creatives, each contributing to the city's visual narrative. The murals, graffiti, and installations that adorn L.A.'s urban landscape are more than mere aesthetics; they are stories told on the canvas of the city itself, reflecting the dreams, struggles, and resilience of its inhabitants. The cultural significance of L.A.'s street art can be traced back to the Chicano Art Movement of the 1960s and 70s, where murals became a form of political expression and cultural affirmation for the Mexican-American community. Today, this tradition continues as street art addresses a plethora of themes, from social justice and environmental concerns to the celebration of cultural heritage and personal identity. I've noticed a revival in Art Deco aesthetics lately and it just feels so 'right' for where we are in our historical context. This article articulates it really well and was a bit of an 'aha' moment for me. "[Art Deco is] defined, first and foremost, by wanting, needing, and having to be multiple things at once. Progress meets timelessness; tradition meets modernity; glass meets stone. " https://lnkd.in/dd-tDNcP

GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA (1983) https://lnkd.in/esSAhwYC This proposal revitalizes the city's downtown area by reusing a distinguished, but now vacant, former government building and by adapting a number of abandoned or underused neighboring structures for additional cultural functions. The main 1908 Beaux-Arts building is upgraded to meet codes and programmatic requirements. A relocation of the entrance from the closed side of the U-shaped building to the open court-yard establishes a direct physical relationship between the museum and its surroundings while creating a single, unified entrance. Covering the court-yard, a translucent inclined plane of stairs has an opening at its center that leads to the Grand Foyer which is a shared space for the different departments. Water descends slowly and evenly from the top of the stairway along a channel carved into the plane, leaving a clear pedestrian path for those walking up the stairs. This water is, in fact, the very water used for the air-conditioning system. In this way, the need for an unsightly cooling tower has been eliminated and this silent cascade becomes the focal point of the city's newest public space. From time to time it's good to take a critical look at everyday places and how they are designed. They tend to be shaped by the culture and time in which they are built, sometimes including the shortcomings or otherwise outdated ideas of that time. A theater, for example, often follows similar design principles, but are the spaces really accessible to everyone? As I perceive it, many have been designed with a dash of white normativity and internalized ableism. With my friend Heini we dream of more accessible cultural venues, and if you have access to ARK magazine you can read about our thoughts from here:
