Too often community engagement is a tick box exercise and it's infuriating. The only people who engage are those who will always do so. Most community members don't get involved because the methods used are not right for them. Councils, commercial and resi developers, renewable energy companies and social housing providers, don't do fall into the lazy traps others do. Celebrating Earth Day with an ode to the sun! We are shining a spotlight on Patuxent, A PAX Services Company's groundbreaking achievement in sustainable development with the completion of Maryland's Largest Rooftop Solar Multi-Family Project in Seneca Village in Gaithersburg, MD (Montgomery County). The objective of the project was to enhance affordable housing in the Gaithersburg area by introducing a new roof-mounted solar power system across 58 buildings to benefit its residents - and Patuxent did just that! This project stands as an example of how innovation and dedication can drive tangible change towards a greener, more sustainable future. We’re seeing this tension unfold in the renewable energy transition at the moment. The current approach often prioritises national environmental and economic benefits while neglecting local and social outcomes in the communities where new infrastructure is being proposed. This thought piece aims to take advantage of a current funding opportunity. It shows how regional communities can start reconciling these tensions and create a more equitable path for communities set to host the nation's future power sources.
