Today is World Environment Day, and this year’s focus is all about land restoration for the future. ☀️ 🌳 According to the United Nations, land degradation affects 3.2 billion people, or 40 per cent of the world’s population. 🌎 The dire impact from energy poverty too plays a significant factor on the environment with 6% of global deforestation directly linked to fuelwood collection and burning – in fact, roughly 190 million tonnes of CO2 is emitted each year from this alone. Solving the complex challenges of energy poverty will make significant inroads into creating a healthier and sustainable planet – it drives education and helps future generations lift themselves out of a perpetual cycle of poverty. Today, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we reflect on the power of sustainable solutions to uplift communities while protecting our planet. “Poverty forces people to spend more money on the most polluting forms of energy, harming their health, opportunities, and savings. Smoky kerosene and traditional wood stoves are two examples. MEC communities turn this dynamic on its head.”, says April Allderdice, CEO, MicroEnergy Credits. At MicroEnergy Credits, we are partnering with communities of microentrepreneurs to work towards a future where everyone can access clean energy, creating pathways out of poverty and contributing to climate action. 🎙 Dora Biondani, Climate Alliance & Energy Poverty Advisory Hub Senior Project Manager: #EnergyPoverty is a multidimensional issue. In northern countries, people struggle to keep their homes warm. In southern countries, they struggle to keep them cool. This, along with renovation and efficiency issues, makes it hard to find a common solution for all. Tailored measures are needed to ensure the best possible outcome, improving people's quality of life and overall reducing the environmental footprint. #EUelections2024

Climate action or energy poverty? The real conundrums of our time is perfectly layed out by Ken Opalo at the Africanist Perspective: making a case against them shouldering the west’s concerns for climate mitigation above local needs for energy parity. shared on rewild last week, below the tl;dr - https://lnkd.in/dMbF2BEf "To be blunt, any climate agenda that doesn’t recognize the very urgent need to end energy poverty across Africa should be rejected outright. Energy-poor countries must not let themselves become preserved sites where firms and households in energy-rich countries earn their carbon credits and the license to pollute. .. In a world where (experts from) high-income countries set the agenda, the pursuit of such “quick wins” will undoubtedly come at the expense of improvements in energy access and human welfare in low-income states." Below is a per capita consumption data across African states, compared to Todd Moss’s fridge. Source: Eat More Electrons

And that marks three northern clean heat transmission highways! Our third and final highway would be building on the work done by impressive schemes already emerging in the area. Much like our previous maps, we can see so much potential in this area to be harness from it's industrial history/future. The diversity and capacity of recoverable heat in the area makes this a really exciting concept. Which highway do you think has the most potential? Manchester - Liverpool 🌹 Yorkshire & Humberside 💮 North East 👼 ⬆ Where else could we see heat transmission highways develop in the future? Net Zero North East England North East & Yorkshire Net Zero Hub North East Local Enterprise Partnership Heat Networks Industry Council The Coal Authority Gateshead Council UKRI - Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge (IDC) Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) The Association for Decentralised Energy SAV Systems
We know that Gateshead Council are hard at work in securing a reliable supply of clean and affordable heat via their heat networks. They are energy pioneers here in the UK, especially with their mine water heat scheme! So here is a little inspiration for the rest of the journey towards Net Zero and the eradication of fuel poverty. 🌍 Climate Change and Poverty: An Urgent Call to Action 🌍 Climate change is more than an environmental issue—it's a social justice challenge. The communities most affected by climate change are often the ones already grappling with poverty. Vulnerable Livelihoods: Climate impacts, like droughts and floods, disproportionately affect those relying on agriculture, pushing families deeper into poverty. 🔹Health Risks: Extreme weather events increase the spread of diseases and limit access to healthcare, exacerbating health inequalities. 🔹 Displacement: Rising sea levels and natural disasters force millions to migrate, disrupting lives and livelihoods. Addressing climate change is not just about protecting our planet; it's about safeguarding the future of vulnerable communities. Sustainable development must integrate climate resilience to break the cycle of poverty. How can we amplify our efforts to tackle both climate change and poverty? Share your thoughts and initiatives below! 🌱#ClimateChange #PovertyReduction #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateJustice #ResilientCommunities #SocialImpact

Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and the theme, "Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment," hits close to home. Did you know that climate change can actually cause poverty? It's true! Climate change keeps pushing people and communities further down, making it harder to survive and thrive. Think about it – extreme weather events, droughts, and floods are becoming more common. These disasters can wipe out entire crops, destroy homes, and leave people struggling to rebuild their lives. It's a vicious cycle that traps people in poverty. So, how can we fight back? By protecting our environment! Every little action we take to fight climate change can make a difference. Let's recycle, conserve water, choose sustainable products, and stand up for policies that protect our planet. Because a healthy environment means a healthier, more just world for everyone. I'm pledging to protect my environment on this day. Why? Because poverty is a terrible thing! It breeds conflict and hatred. It makes people feel hopeless and powerless. We can't let that happen. Together, let's build a world where everyone has the chance to live a dignified and prosperous life! #EndPoverty #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #Sustainability #GreenLiving #EnvironmentalProtection #SustainableDevelopment #SocialJustice #Empowerment #TogetherWeCan

Overconsumption is driving a vicious cycle of environmental degradation, rural poverty, and increased disaster risk. Currently, up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, directly affecting half of humanity and threatening US$44 trillion in economic losses—nearly half of global GDP. We must take urgent action now to protect the environment—so that the environment can protect us. #EnvironmentalProtection #SustainableLiving #FightClimateChange #SaveOurPlanet #EcoFriendly #RuralPoverty #DisasterRiskReduction #ClimateAction #ProtectOurEarth #GlobalResilience #GBDRRRF #DRR
