This assignment, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aims to support Turkmenistan’s transition to low-carbon energy. 💡As a country rich in natural gas, #Turkmenistan currently relies heavily on gas for power generation while possessing significant untapped renewable resources. The government’s vision to boost energy exports and improve living standards aligns with their Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, targeting a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030. Led by Stuart Thorncraft and Nurshod Saidov, our project team’s role will involve producing a comprehensive study and roadmap for the power sector, analysing three scenarios: Business as Usual, Low-Carbon, and Accelerated Low-Carbon. The world grid is self-organizing invisibly right before our eyes. In the shadow of geopolitical storms, a new alliance is emerging that could transform Europe's energy landscape. Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, countries rich in natural resources and ambitious plans, are joining forces to export green energy to Europe. Today, at a meeting in Tashkent, the ministers of economy and energy of these countries discussed the prospects for laying a main corridor through the territory of Azerbaijan, which will become a bridge through which "clean" electricity from solar and wind power plants in Central Asia will flow to homes and businesses in Europe. They will lay an energy cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea to facilitate the sale of green energy to Europe. This project not only diversifies Europe's energy sources, but also opens up new opportunities for economic cooperation between participating countries. The Memorandum of Cooperation signed today to interconnect the energy systems of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan marks an important step towards creating an integrated regional network that can improve energy efficiency and stimulate the growth of the green economy. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa(ECA), the GEIDCO(Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization) (GEIDCO), and the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) have launched a joint training programme on “Sharing Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Energy Storage Technologies (EST) for Africa’s Sustainable Development”.The training, which is running virtually from 4-14 June 2024 has attracted more than 140 participants from 25 African countries, who hail from transport and energy ministries, energy commissions, power companies, and academia, as well as ECA and AfDB. Hanan Morsy, Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist at the ECA, said at the opening session that EVs could play a key role in climate change mitigation, energy transition, and value chain development, and that ECA would continue to support African member States in EV development, energy transition and industrialisation at large, through a value-chain approach. She also thanked the partners for working together with ECA on this meaningful training programme.
