....Foreigners earn less than Chinese for the same job! 😡 This week, I've been discussing my search for a Foreign Operations Manager in Taicang (see the job details in my recent post) and got some HEATED feedback 😡 Let's be honest: 👉 The job market for foreigners in China is challenging. It has been tough, and no end is in sight. 👉 The exodus of foreigners DOES NOT result in more job openings; companies are localizing instead. 👉 Most foreigners remaining in China have personal reasons, such as family. 👨👩👧👦 👉 Many who've left now wish to return, drawn by the dynamic business environment and high salaries. 💼 👉 Some find it hard to match their previous compensation back home despite higher living costs in China. 💸 👉 Others have moved to countries like India (good economy very bad feedback to living there), Vietnam, or Thailand (great for living, not so great for working) 🌏 Europe offers work-life balance but can be frustratingly slow and limiting. 🕰️ ➡ This situation leads to more job seekers than available positions, impacting salaries. 📉 Salaries for foreigners are going down; that is a reality. However, companies aren't deliberately lowballing foreigners. Many candidates voluntarily lower their salary expectations by up to 25%, not due to coercion but market realities. Job hunting in China is undoubtedly tough, and it may remain so. But blaming this on an imagined ill-intent from companies is unproductive. 🙅♂️ If you're urgently seeking a job in China, you have my full support and sympathy. Here are some best practices from my network: 👉 Improve your Chinese language skills. 🗣️ This is crucial. I haven't seen any foreigner-friendly roles without this requirement in years. Use any downtime to master the language. 👉 Keep networking. 🤝 Attend events, apply directly to companies in China and abroad, and maintain professionalism online. Avoid emotional outbursts, especially on LinkedIn. 👉 Keep adding relevant skills. 📚 Whatever your industry or function, keep building it up. 👉 Above all, make a financial and emotional plan. 💡 Be aware of how long you can financially continue without finding a job, and be aware of how you handle emotional setbacks.
