In a move aimed at boosting the space sector, the Indian government has relaxed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rules, allowing 100% overseas investment in the production of satellite components. The decision, approved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, divides the satellite sub-sector into three activities with specified limits for foreign investment. The policy change permits up to 74% FDI through automatic approval in satellite manufacturing, operations, and related segments. Beyond this threshold, government consent is required. The move is expected to encourage global participation, promote technology adoption, create jobs, and enhance India's self-reliance in the space industry.
