WirtschaftsWoche engaged Munich Strategy to evaluate 4,000 SMEs. SÜDPACK stands for innovation and sustainability. Here are my main takeaways from Sustainable Packaging Summit in Amsterdam last week: DATA, DIGITIZATION, STANDARDIZATION 📊 Data management is gaining unprecedented level of importance due to increased demands on decision making, transparent communication and reporting. Coupled with work needed on internal processes’ , systems architecture adaptation and smart new tools selection, it’s a giant work so the time is now to get organized. 💻Thru QR codes and watermarks, packaging will become the key communication channel not only for consumers and customers, but for the entire ecosystem from recyclers to auditors, and this is yet a new notion for which companies need to organize. Point above applies again. 🔦It’s encouraging to see industry-wide progress towards comprehensive traceability and product marking, a crucial component for effective life cycle management and transparency driving accountability. INNOVATION AND CIRCULARITY 🏅The Innovation Awards nominees and winners highlight important strides in recyclability, end-of-life solutions, and alternatives to fossil-fuel materials. 💡I believe, though, that we are yet to witness more breakthrough innovation, especially in the use phase of packaging, underscoring the importance of circular solutions, including so much needed reuse which is a growing focus. 🤚🏼Numerous startups are creating circular solutions but need big brands to adopt their innovations to achieve scalability and economic viability. More hands raised needed. COLLABORATION AND PARTNERSHIPS 🫱🏼🫲🏽It’s inspiring to witness the continued rise of industry partnerships and collaborations. 🏔️A recurring theme I noticed through all the discussions, “we can’t do it alone”—highlighting the need for joint development projects, shared goals and focus on wicked problems. 🌍This shift means product innovations will increasingly evolve into solution innovations through partnerships and new business models. FINALLY....🙏🏻A big thank you to Packaging Europe for bringing together so inspiring program and for the seamless organization that allowed participants like me to fully engage with the content without any distractions.
