Martha Van Arts is one of New Zealand’s hidden treasures. She’s passionate about sustainability and making the world a better place. But not just that, she's done something about it. When she and her husband Olly realised that sunscreen products were largely awful, they set about developing a completely new product that didn’t suck. And so Skinnies was created - a sunscreen product that isn’t water-based and slimy and that is a joy to use. It's my favourite :) But Martha and Olly weren’t product designers, they weren’t chemists, they were their own best customers - they entered the world of product design, chemistry, consumer goods, packaging, marketing ... and they nailed it. Turning the tables with pencils! Recently, our brand strategist went to a stationary and caught sight of a great product. While all other wooden pencils cost around five rupees, he saw a similar pencil from Flair pens Ltd that was sold at rupees ten. He wondered why. On looking further he noticed something strange about those pencils. There were small inscriptions all over it. When he found that it was multiplication tables up to twelve, he smiled in awe! “Pencil with tables” is not just another creative product. Here product and innovation seamlessly merge and comprehend each other. This is how an innovation should be. It must fulfil its purpose by complimenting the product. Now the cost of the pencil seems reasonable, right?! Upon hearing this from him, I thought This is the power of innovation. It alters the nature of your products and substantially boosts its worth!
