It will be really interesting to see how universities will respond to the coming wave of AI-augmented applications. Seems like there are both potential positive use cases (e.g. helping level the playing field for the majority of student without access to college counselors) as well as some unintended negative ones (increasingly similar essay, facilitating hyper ambitious students to apply to dozens of schools). Do you think the positives will outweigh the negatives?

What does the workforce of the future look like? What training do we need to offer to the students today to make sure that they are prepared for the future jobs? Should science students learn more about AI or should computer science students learn more about biology and chemistry (something that does not happen in many programs)? Should we prepare the next generation of scientists for more combined work environments? I will share my insights as someone who teaches both science and business students. I look forward to being a speaker on a panel discussing "the Workforce of the Future" at the Bio Integrate 2024 in Cambridge tomorrow. #biointegrate2024

What is MAIN? The Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN) is the nation's first statewide AI initiative, initially comprised of all 15 community colleges (Coahoma Community College, Copiah-Lincoln Community College, East Central Community College, East Mississippi Community College, Hinds Community College, Holmes Community College, Itawamba Community College, Jones College, Meridian Community College, Mississippi Delta Community College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Northeast Mississippi Community College, Northwest Mississippi Community College, Pearl River Community College, Southwest Mississippi Community College) and several major universities in Mississippi, including Mississippi State University, The University of Southern Mississippi, and University of Mississippi. Objectives of MAIN include providing statewide leadership in addressing AI and workforce needs, attracting innovative industries, and meeting educational and training requirements across K-12, community and technical colleges, universities, as well as various business sectors. Dear connections (especially fellow educators), Science education is not always about “chalk-and-talk learning” or going to the science lab for experiment. There are many teaching and learning approach that we can make in order to fullfill the 21st Century Learning. As we are advancing to an era whereby technology is no longer foreign to us, I believe, we (as a teacher) need to equib our students with the softskills in using technology wisely. As the saying goes, “A smart technology requires a smart user”. I did my FYP for my degree in utilizing online simulation as a teaching aid and am proudly sharing it with my students. This is due to the fact that I want the students to have exposure on the usage of AI in education especially in Science Education. Science nowadays involves the usage of technology, in order to advance, students need to be familiar with it. In addition, this approach also revolves on the concept of student-centred learning as it is in line with inquiry-based learning whereby the students will be given a manual which requires them to follow and answer the questions in it. It is our job, to make science education as interesting as possible because if we cannot catch our students interest, then science will be boring for them. My first ever grant proposal was accepted! 🎉 The rapid development of generative AI and other digital technologies is changing the field of science communication. As an educator, I'm curious to know how we can best prepare our students for their future careers. Scientific skills that currently take years to develop - such as academic writing, data analysis, and mastery of the English language - might require less time to learn, or become less valued, in the future. Which skills will remain relevant, and which need to be “future-proofed”? How can we adjust the curriculum so that our students enter the workforce with a cutting-edge skillset? My project "Science communication of the future: Crafting a skillset in the age of AI" will be funded by the Future-proofing Science Education Grant for Junior Teachers provided by the Faculty of Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Our paper delves into the potential impact of language clarity, precision, engagement, and contextual relevance on mathematical understanding through word problems. We focus on three prominent DLPs—ASSISTments/E-TRIALS, MATHia/UpGrade, and Canvas/Terracotta—and propose hypothetical studies to uncover how subtle language modifications can boost student engagement and comprehension. While these studies serve as illustrations, they offer a roadmap for researchers keen on harnessing DLPs for empirical investigation. Our aim is to shed light on the evolving landscape of research infrastructure in digital learning platforms and the immense opportunities they offer. By highlighting distinct implementations of the same research question across different educational technologies, we unveil both similarities and differences, paving the way for advancements in math education and beyond. Great! Math education in the U.S. will need to be strategically rethought, re-taught and delivered. AI can help for sure, but more and more the focus needs to be on what the math will be used for - STEM in college, CTE out of high school, mid-career certification in Cyber ? Variability in a systems approach that operates both out of and in school, college or training is critical. Eventually, we will need a personalized SaaS math learning & application infrastructure in the country due to the decreasing number of math capable instructors at all levels and the lack of math teaching continuity across the grade and degree progression.
