“I see a brighter future for our kids, because they want to participate in everything that is happening here at school.” –Nozi Rajuile Meet Nozi Rajuile, the principal of Tsholetsega Public School in South Africa, and the “brighter future” she’s talking about all started with… toilets, but not just any old toilets. These toilets are part of a game-changing sanitation system that’s completely clean, odorless, and water-saving. It also doesn't connect to the sewer system, which previously would overflow and close the school for weeks at a time. In addition, the old sewer system lacked clean water and safe sanitation, which was keeping kids from wanting to use the bathrooms at school. But since the installation of this new system, the Tsholetsega Public School has seen an 80% reduction in absentee rates. Now kids want to go to school, and more kids in class means more kids who can go on to realize their full potential. Every year in the New Zealand, Australia and the UK, rental property investors are given massive unjustified subsidies on GST (VAT) and council rates. In NZ this totals over NZD 3 billion per year while in Australia it is over AUD 7 billion dollars a year. How about the UK?Landlords do not pay GST (VAT) on rental income and pay only residential rates on their property which is used to derive taxable income. Owning a rental property and collecting income is a business activity. So how is this situation fair to all other businesses that pay their taxes? It also deprives state, local and central government of much needed tax revenues for spending on infrastructure such as libraries, water, affordable housing and public transport.

This is a day of reflection on the truths of history. It is also a day to focus on what moves us forward. Implementing UNDRIP is one very important step in moving us to true reconciliation. But implementation is about actions, not merely words.

Two years ago we helped form a group of forest guardians in the Munduruku territory of Takuara in the Tapajós National Forest (Pará, Brazil) and have been working with them since in developing their territorial defence strategies. A couple of weeks ago, we returned and it was incredible to hear how far they have come. Showing what is possible with the right approach and conditions. We believe they are a great example for any traditional community that wishes to protect their lands. 5 reasons why they have been so successful; 1) Community Engagement - from leaders to children. With over 70 individuals selected and participating in their guardian program. 2) Formation of sub groups within the territorial defence group. Including health, technology, fire prevention, education, forest knowledge / management (and from 2025 Water Guardians too) 3) Program embedded into the children's education, highlighting the importance of protecting the forest (teenagers are also brought on monitoring patrols) 4) Strong, trusted and unified leadership from the chief, paje (shaman) and guardian group coordinator (who is the first Indigenous professor of law at the Western Para Federal University). Bridging cultural and contemporary needs. 5)Weekly actions which involve all sub groups from patrols, meetings, analysis of monitoring areas, contact with public prosecutors office. Housing is a right.

Today marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day serves as a powerful reminder for all of us to reflect on the legacy and lasting impacts of Canada’s colonial history on Indigenous Peoples, particularly the residential school system. It is a day to honour the lives of the children who never made it home, to stand in solidarity with Survivors, and to recognize the profound intergenerational trauma that continues to affect Indigenous families and communities.    The truth and reconciliation process requires a national acknowledgement through learning about the individual and collective experiences of Indigenous people affected by the residential school system, and a reflection on the actions that each of us can take to participate in the truth and reconciliation process, on September 30 and every day.   We have compiled a list of resources and activities that can serve as a starting point for self-education, reflection and engagement in the truth and reconciliation process for Indigenous people. San Juan Field Operations hosted the first Teen Citizens Academy in Puerto Rico earlier this month. CBP participated as part of the Alas Para Un Sueño (Wings for a Dream) program, an initiative of the Puerto Rico Department of Education’s Bayamon Educational Region (ORE). “This program highlights CBP’s dedication to community engagement and education”, said Roberto Vaquero, San Juan Field Office Director of Field Operations. “By introducing students to our mission and operations, we inspire them to imagine their future contributions to national security and public service”. The Teen Citizens Academy will continue through June 2025, featuring additional visits to CBP facilities and collaborations with federal and state partners to provide students with a comprehensive and enriching experience.
