Ever wondered how a chemistry startup can slash waste by 70% and CO2 emissions by 40% while staying agile? Over the last couple of months, I've had the pleasure of reconnecting with many of you and I wanted to share a bit about what we're doing at DUDE CHEM. Our manufacturing recipes based on the principles of green chemistry are a game-changer, reducing waste by up to 70% and CO2 emissions by 40% in one of our processes. This isn't just about being eco-friendly; it's about redefining efficiency and sustainability in an industry that desperately needs it. Imagine the impact if every manufacturer adopted these practices – less waste, lower emissions, and a healthier planet. Recently, we carried out the tech-transfer of an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) at one of our partner CDMO's site. Our colleagues were able to demonstrate the same results in their lab as what we had achieved in ours, right-first-time! We've forged strong partnerships with over 30 existing manufacturers across Europe, enhancing supply chain resilience. This collaborative approach ensures that we can deliver consistent, high-quality products while bringing back manufacturing to Europe. It's a win-win for everyone involved. As someone who's been in the chem industry for >10 years, I can confidently say that these innovations are not just incremental improvements- they're transformative. We're not just keeping up with the times; we are challenging the status-quo. I believe that the Star Factory & Star Factory iReadiness projects can best represent the spirit of innovation and forward-looking vision that permeated the Solvay conferences, well represented by the photo below. Back then, Ernest Solvay discussed the Future and designed the future at these conferences. Today, with the Star Factory & Star Factory iReadiness projects, like its founding fathers, Solvay continues to look to the future of basic chemistry, discussing, thinking and investing in the plants of the future, more sustainable, safer and more digital. These are projects that require investments, human resources, soft & hard skills, long times and great collaboration between multidisciplinary teams... ...but the results can be as long-lasting as the chemical products made in the plants we want to accompany into the future.

We are happy to announce that our next start-up that will present at the 2024 Innovators Roundtable is RE:CHEMISTRY - By GFBio and their Chief Commercial Officer, Jan Weernink. This annual event is hosted by Nike this year and will take place in their HQ Campus, Beaverton, Oregon, USA between 28-30 October. For the last decade, GFBiochemicals has been developing novel process technology enabling Levulinic Acid derivatives to be produced in commercial quantities. In 2022, the company started the commercial deployment of its patented technology platform and has since then been producing commercial volumes through it’s manufacturing network. To meet market demand, the company has started plans to inaugurate it’s first in kind, large scale commercial operations in the south of France where the company has its main offices and R&D center. The main areas where the levulinate esters and ketals are gaining traction as viable alternatives to petrochemical incumbents include Coatings, Home Care, I&I and Agriculture applications. The core value proposition of their products includes the full biogenic carbon nature of the products, improved safety profile in handling and use and the overall strong performance on par with incumbent technology. In case you missed it: Australia’s Cauldron Ferm has been awarded USD $1.76 million by the United States Department of Defense to plan a commercial-scale precision fermentation facility—with the potential to unlock up to $100 million in follow-on funding to build the US-based facility. Significantly, Cauldron is the only non-US-based company to receive funding through this program. This achievement highlights the growing global recognition of Australian innovation in continuous fermentation. 👏 Congratulations to Michele Stansfield and the entire Cauldron team on this milestone! These grants are part of the US Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP), which has now invested a total of USD $60 million into advancing biomanufacturing technologies. Notably, 5 out of the 9 final grant recipients are utilising precision fermentation—demonstrating the US government’s clear recognition of its transformative potential to create secure, resilient supply chains and drive economic growth. As Heidi Shyu, US Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, aptly put it: "The next industrial revolution will be a biomanufacturing revolution." This is a strong signal of the US government’s strategic vision for biomanufacturing as a cornerstone of a thriving global bioeconomy.
