Looking for some inspirational weekend reading? A new paper informed by scientific research and best practices from around the world outlines five principles to guide the global implementation of natural climate solutions. Our friends at The Nature Conservancy summarized the key findings beautifully in this quick read, and explored the question: Why aren’t we harnessing the power of nature to its fullest climate potential? Quick answer – we are!! https://lnkd.in/dJmZQKcM #climatesolutions

"Globally, natural climate solutions could deliver more than a third of the emission reductions needed by 2030 to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. " This is huge, and good, news for creating a timely response to the climate crisis. If we work with natural systems, instead of removing or degrading them, we can rapidly respond to the climate crisis. What does this mean for marketing the social good? --We need to design commons in which natural systems can do their work. (This can be tricky when natural commons span political borders.) --We need to distribute natural solutions where they are most effective for all people. (We can't keep distributing natural solutions just to wealthy communities or countries.) --We need to invest in (pay for) creating and restoring natural systems. (Large wilderness areas, protected wetlands, and marine preserves aren't just nice to have.) --We need promotion to educate people on the function and value of natural systems. (People won't fund and support something they don't know about.) Design, distribution, pricing, and promotion are fundamental marketing activities. How can you, in your local community, create or protect the natural systems that can be a large part of the climate solution? After all, Nature can't take care of us if we don't take care of nature. (Disclosure: I give a tiny amount of money monthly to The Nature Conservancy.)

The boreal, home to 67% of Canada’s wetlands and a quarter of the world’s wetlands, is a crucial ecosystem supporting biodiversity, carbon storage, and healthy watersheds. Yet, climate change poses uncertain risks to these wetland ecosystems, with cascading effects on wildlife, forests, water quality, and the industries and communities that rely on them. In collaboration with Western University, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Athabasca University, Ducks Unlimited Canada is developing an advanced model to forecast how climate change might alter wetland distribution across the Western Boreal Forest. This simulation will use fine-scale climate projections to close knowledge gaps, providing actionable insights on the future of boreal wetlands under climate change pressures. We are seeking input to guide this study’s direction to ensure it addresses critical information gaps, meets the needs of diverse stakeholders, and maximizes its value for industry adaptation and mitigation efforts. Through your comments, we can refine our approach and tailor our outputs to support sustainable industry practices and regional climate resilience. While summer wildfire season may have passed, the devastating effects of this year's and previous year's fires still remain. Looking forward to a future where summers will only be getting hotter, learn more about the anticipated effects this will have on biodiversity, climate, and marginalized communities in this short article I wrote for the Munk School Environmental Working Group:
