𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐀𝐈): 𝐀 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞—𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭? 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐏𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐑! We are excited to share the findings of our latest study, where we explore how GenAI both enables and challenges Open Science. Conducted collaboratively by an international team, including me, Mohammad Hosseini, Serge Horbach, and Kristi Holmes, our study examines GenAI’s opportunities and risks through the lens of the UNESCO Recommendation for Open Science. 𝐓𝐋;𝐃𝐑: GenAI has enormous potential to enhance accessibility and efficiency in science. But to avoid jeopardising trust, we need clear ethical guidelines that prioritise openness, fairness, and transparency. ✨ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 GenAI holds incredible potential to transform scientific work. From simplifying complex research into accessible language to breaking down language barriers through translation, GenAI can make science more inclusive, accessible, and understandable. It also creates exciting possibilities for greater public engagement by enabling citizens to actively contribute to research processes. 🔍 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 However, GenAI’s power comes with significant challenges. Many AI models operate as “black boxes,” with decisions that are difficult to trace—a clear conflict with Open Science’s principles of transparency. Biases in training data could reinforce existing social inequalities, and the environmental impact of high computational demands raises sustainability concerns. 🌍 𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞 Our study underscores the need for collaboration across science, technology, and policy. Researchers must adopt a critical approach to GenAI integration, developers must design transparent and unbiased tools, and policymakers must establish frameworks that balance innovation with risk management.
