It's great to see strong support for #EuropeanUniversities alliances in today's high-level report on the interim evaluation of Horizon Europe and the future R&I framework programme. 🤝 In the report, European Universities are recognised as a key tool to foster an #attractive and #inclusive R&I ecosystem in Europe by providing new spaces for deep institutional collaboration of universities and striving for new levels of student and staff #mobility across Europe. 💪 Only 5 years after the launch of the first #EuropeanUniversities alliances, they are seen to have already delivered significant progress and - even more importantly - carry potential for advancing a European higher education and strengthening a common European R&I ecosystem in the future. 👩⚕️ Recommendations for future developments include support for early-career researchers, and a focus on research across all academic disciplines with a strong European added value. This resonates well with Una Europa's Vision on R&I, which puts early-career researchers front and centre with the ambition of creating a supportive environment that empowers individuals to thrive, fostering mobility and exchange of young talents across Europe. In addition, we are working hard to support the evolution of Una Europa’s six collaborative focus areas, into interdisciplinary hubs for research, education and knowledge transfer. 💷 Finally, it's impossible not to mention the clear call for securing sustainable financial support across all university missions to unlock the transformative potential of alliances - of course within a strong and secure overall budget. Now it will be interesting to see how this report will feed into the most recent discussions in Brussels, where big question marks on the future have come up. #WeAreUnaEuropa #EuropeanUniversities

Despite little change among leading and lagging countries in the latest European Innovation Scoreboard, Cyprus has made a remarkable leap from 15th place in 2017 to 10th in 2024, maintaining its 'strong innovator' status for the third consecutive year. What it takes? - 𝟯𝟵% 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 from 2017 to 2023, outpacing the EU average. - Transformation from a place with no universities into a research hub that is now home to 𝟭𝟮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝟯,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀. - The island is on track to receive €𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 from 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. - 𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀 supported by a growing network of innovation hubs and venture capital. - Government initiatives such as the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 and a new €𝟮𝟳.𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 equity fund to attract international talent and support start-ups. Efforts to boost innovation in Europe’s Widening countries are clearly paying off, with 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 out of 15 nations seeing year-on-year 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀. Traditionally funded by the government and programs like Horizon, Cyprus faces challenges in spin-out policies and IP rights but is clearly on the path to becoming a leading innovation hub. 💯 The verdict is in. And the Netherlands ranks among Europe's top 5 innovators according to the recently released European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS). 👀 What criteria were the EIS looking at? The EIS report groups countries as Innovation Leaders or Strong Innovators based on EU averages. Since 2017, most EU nations have improved their innovation performance with some fluctuations and things to improve upon. 🦾 What were the Netherlands strongest areas? The three main areas were a strong education system, top research institutions, and a digitally proficient population. However, the country still struggles with low private investment in innovation, which is below the EU average. ✨Overall, the Netherlands continues to strengthen its status as a leading innovator in Europe – and this can be seen here in Amsterdam, from the city’s dynamic startup ecosystem to the groundbreaking research that is conducted at institutions such as the Amsterdam UMC, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the University of Amsterdam. 🔗Get all the facts here: https://lnkd.in/eU9suncc #DutchInnovators #Top5Innovators #InnovationInAmsterdam #AmsterdamInnovators

Last week, EURASHE participated in the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (#WIRE) in #Budapest The conference brought together experts and policy-makers from 22 countries to tackle the EU’s pressing challenge of boosting European #competitiveness with RDI. Key insights include: ⚙️ Valuable research on “regional development traps” by Ron Boschma. Each region faces different challenges. There is often a lack of adaptability of old industrial activities. Education and extensive inter-regional collaboration play a key role in tackling these challenges. 👥 Local policy-makers play a key role in developing smart specialisation strategies and creating #networks. A systemic approach is needed to nurture the regional innovation ecosystem. 🤝 Exploiting synergies between the Framework Programme and Cohesion Policy must be a political priority in widening countries. #Lithuania and #Malta have successfully moved large amounts of funding from #ERDF to #Horizon Europe. The strong collaboration between DG Regio and DG RTD must also occur at the national level of relevant authorities. 🎓 Universities play a central role in fostering the quadruple/quintuple helix innovation model. However, in some regions, not even the triple helix model is being employed. 📃 The European Regional Innovation scoreboard is a useful tool to highlight local challenges to innovation. David Uhlíř from the South Moravian Innovation Centre (JIC) emphasised the importance of streamlining RDI policies and simplify missions. It is better to “do fewer things but do them well.” Martin Kern, Director of the EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology, highlighted the vital role that the EIT plays in improving the #skills of researchers and innovators.

Research and Innovation Collaboration Networks Across EU Regions! 1. Collaborative Research Collaborative research has steadily increased over time. It aims at solving complex problems but also saving research costs, avoiding duplicated research efforts, enhancing knowledge spillovers and minimising the fragmentation of research 2. Fragmentation Co-patents data show that Research and Innovation (R&I) collaborations are fragmented nationally and with a strong cross-border effect in the EU 3. EU R&I Policies The two main EU R&I policies (Framework Programme and Interreg Europe Programme) help overcoming these effects by steering R&I collaborations across Europe 4. Synergies Additionally, the two EU R&I policies seem to display some synergies: participation in Interreg 2014-2020 Europe Programme is positively correlated with participation in Horizon 2020 (H2020) 5. Positioning Finally, being well-positioned in the network of R&I collaborations created through the Framework Programme has a positive impact on the patenting activity of EU regions Make sure to check out the article European Commission here: https://lnkd.in/d43aGQP6 #innovation #policy Interreg Europe #horizon2020 #H2020 #research #randd
