Cheapflation - a faster rise in the prices of cheaper goods compared to the prices of more expensive goods - is a global phenomenon. In Russia, “inflation for the poor” is also higher than inflation for the rich and general inflation. A very interesting phenomenon. Cheapflation usually coexists with shrinkflation, and this is also a worldwide process. We in Russia often complain about reducing the volume of packaging or replacing expensive ingredients in a dish with cheaper ones - but this is what businesses do in developed countries too. Belgium example: “Chicken soup, in which the percentage of chicken has dropped from 8.6% to 5.8% in just six years. Albert Heijn fish fingers have reduced their fish content from 75% to 55%. Finally, Bertolli Liquid cooking oil has reduced the proportion of olive oil from 20% to 7%.” #economy #inflation #numbers

Produce inflation has a noticeable impact on fresh produce. Although the fresh fruit industry has had relatively modest inflation, consumers are nonetheless greatly impacted, viewing costs as being over 30% higher than in 2019. Retailers are trying to adjust with calculated deals, but there's a mismatch in execution and communication, and the volume of promotional activity isn't what it was before the pandemic. Pricinganding value is crucial, according to industry experts, who also point out that customers are becoming more picky and that successful promotions can change the dynamics of sales across categories.
