Why #Projects and #Products Fail – The Importance of Prioritisation and #StrategicAlignment Too often, projects and products fail not because of a lack of funding, great ideas, or talented teams, but because of poor prioritisation, misaligned strategic objectives, and the failure to test and validate an MVP before scaling. Here’s what typically goes wrong: 🔹 Feature Overload & Lack of #Prioritisation Teams try to build everything at once instead of focusing on core functionalities that deliver immediate value. This leads to bloated roadmaps, delayed timelines, and resource drain. The solution? Ruthless prioritisation using frameworks like MoSCoW or RICE to focus on what truly matters. 🔹 Skipping #MVP Validation Many teams launch without proper testing, user feedback, and iteration cycles. Instead of refining based on real-world usage, they push a fully developed product to market, only to realise it doesn’t meet user needs. A strong MVP should test key assumptions and be measured against engagement, retention, and conversion metrics. 🔹 Large Teams Without Clear Direction Bigger teams don’t always mean faster execution. Without clear ownership, accountability, and alignment to strategic objectives, large teams can become bottlenecks, slowing down decision-making and creating inefficiencies. Smaller, high-impact teams with clear mandates often outperform large, misaligned teams. 🔹 No Strategic Alignment to Business Goals Every feature, project, or initiative must tie back to business goals. If a product team is building features that don’t support the company’s growth, retention, or revenue goals, it’s wasted effort. Strategic alignment ensures that every action drives measurable business impact. The Solution? A KPI-Driven Execution Model See below.. 📌 Customer-Centric KPIs • Retention Rate 📈 (Are users staying?) • Net Promoter Score (NPS) ⭐ (Do they love the product?) • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) 💰 (Are we acquiring efficiently?) 📌 Product Performance KPIs • Feature Adoption Rate ⚙️ (Are the right features being used?) • Time to Value ⏳ (How fast do users get value?) • Churn Rate ❌ (Are we losing users due to complexity or lack of value?) 📌 Operational & Execution KPIs • Cycle Time ⏱️ (How long does it take to execute tasks?) • Velocity 📊 (How efficiently is the team delivering?) • Alignment Score 🎯 (How well do initiatives align with company objectives?) 📌 Financial KPIs • Revenue Impact 💰 (How does this feature drive growth?) • ROI on Product Development 🚀 (Are we investing in the right areas?) • Cost Efficiency Ratio ⚖️ (Are we managing resources effectively?) Without robust processes on measuring key KPIs projects are likely to have many gaps and cannot measure the success and in turn not make the correct strategic decisions. Therefore every project should be tracked against key metrics that align with strategic goals #HappyFriday

Day 5: Prioritizing Features for your MVP As discussed in earlier post, avoid overloading your MVP with many features. Your goal is to keep things simple and focus on what’s essential to solve a specific problem for your users. This is why prioritizing features is crucial and as it gives a simple approach to help you decide what to include—and what to leave out. One major benefit of a well-prioritized MVP is that it lets you test the core idea without distractions. If users love the MVP, you’ll know you’re onto something! If they don’t, you’ll still have saved time and resources. While there are many techniques to help prioritize ( e.g Kano Model, RICE Scoring Framework, MOSCOW Technique, Feature Prioritization Matrix), the best prioritization technique for an MVP depends on your specific project and goals. However, one of the most popular and effective methods is the MoSCoW Technique. Must-have: These are the core features that are absolutely essential for your MVP to function. Should-have: These are important features that enhance the user experience, but aren't strictly necessary for the MVP to work. Could-have: These are nice-to-have features that can be added later if time and resources permit. Won't-have: These are features that won't be included in the initial MVP but may be considered for future releases How to use the MoSCoW Method to prioritize your MVP features: -Identify all potential features -Categorize features -Prioritize within categories -Create a prioritized backlog Building an MVP is about creating a purposeful, minimal version of your product. Focus on the core problem, prioritize must-have features, and let user feedback guide your next steps. #productmanagement #MVP #productdevelopment

MoSCoW reduce el estrés y mejora la calidad de tus proyectos. 📢 El método MoSCow es una técnica de priorización ampliamente utilizada en la gestión de proyectos, particularmente en entornos ágiles. Su nombre es un acrónimo que clasifica las prioridades en cuatro categorías: Must have, Should have, Could have, y Won't have. #ProjectManagement #ProductManagement #MoSCoWMethod #Agile #AgileMethodology #BusinessStrategy

𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: "Extensive prioritisation framework are an overkill!" – I believe prioritization is less about scoring and more like turning noise into music. 🎶 Now hear me out! I think like any product leader, I did go through the rabbit hole of building complex prioritisation formula, gathering CS and Sales to help me score initiatives and overall try to be the most pragmatic possible.... But here’s the harsh reality: 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. By the time you’ve wrangled everyone’s inputs and completed the framework, the market would probably slightly shifted, your competition might have released something new and exciting or fresh customer feedback has rolled in. So, how do we make prioritization efficient, actionable, and dynamic? 1️⃣ 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 Start with clarity: what data points will guide your prioritization? Ensure the insights are easy to identify and understand for everyone involved. 2️⃣ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 I’m a fan of RICE—it’s a solid foundation, balancing effort and opportunity. Sure, you can tweak the weights for specific metrics, but let’s not turn this into rocket science. 🚀 3️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 A prioritization score 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿. It’s a tool to evaluate initiatives against one another, not a rigid roadmap order. 4️⃣ Consider dynamic factors Beyond scores, other variables often influence your roadmap: - Available resources - Specialized knowledge - Business seasonality (e.g., sales-heavy Q4) These factors are constantly evolving and should shape your decisions. 🎵 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 Prioritization is one of the biggest challenges for any Product Manager—it’s about making sense of signals amidst the noise. To succeed: - Stay anchored in your short-, mid-, and long-term vision. - Collaborate closely with your peers to avoid working in a vacuum. - Treat your roadmap as the "road" to your vision, with each initiative paving the way. Think of it like crafting a song: your team is the band, and your roadmap is the melody. Make it cohesive, powerful, and impactful. Now, rock on and keep turning noise into music! 🎸 📷 : Great memories from my university years when Product Management was barely a thing but the band was already rocking! 🚀 Please like & comment if you agree – I really want to hear your tips to drive a great roadmap! ⬆️ Follow Pierre Bizeul for views, tips and resources on ProductOS #Saas #Prioritisation #ProductOS #ProductManagement

Feeling torn between features? The MoSCoW Method can help! Today, we delve into this popular prioritization framework for product managers. 👨💻 Making Tough Choices: Product development is full of tough choices. With limited resources, you need to determine which features deserve the most attention. The MoSCoW Method provides a clear and structured approach to prioritizing product features and requirements. 🧠 Understanding MoSCoW: MoSCoW is an acronym that stands for: - Must-Have: These are the essential features that your product absolutely needs to have in order to function and be considered viable. Without them, the product wouldn't meet user needs or deliver value. - Should-Have: These are important features that add significant value to the product and enhance the user experience. They are not essential but are highly desirable for product success. - Could-Have: These are desirable features that would be nice to have but are not critical for the core functionality or user experience. They can be considered for future iterations if resources allow. - Won't-Have (for now): These features are deferred or eliminated, at least for the current product version. They may be reconsidered in the future based on user feedback or changing market demands. 🤝 Applying MoSCoW in Product Management: The MoSCoW Method can be used in various product development stages: - Product Planning: Prioritize features for the initial product launch, ensuring the "Must-Have" features are well-defined. - Roadmap Development: Determine which features will be included in upcoming product releases, considering a mix of "Should-Have" and "Could-Have" features based on available resources and user feedback. - Stakeholder Communication: Use MoSCoW to clearly communicate feature priorities to stakeholders, ensuring everyone is aligned on the product vision and development roadmap. 💯 Benefits of the MoSCoW Method: By using MoSCoW, product managers can: - Make Clear and Transparent Decisions - Manage Expectations - Prioritize Based on Value - Maintain Flexibility The MoSCoW Method is a collaborative process. Involve stakeholders like developers, designers, and marketing teams in the prioritization process to gain valuable insights and ensure alignment. #ProductManagement #ProductManager #ProductDevelopment #ProductStrategy #ProductMarketing #Metrics #NPS #AgileProductManagement #ProductDesign #ProductLaunch #ProductLifecycle #ProductInnovation #LeanProductManagement #Scrum #CustomerFeedback #MarketResearch #UserExperience #ProductRoadmap #Features #Timeline #Prioritization #Roadmap #ProductLeadership #SoftwareProductManagement #User #UserResearch #Interviews #Surveys #Testing #UsabilityTesting #ABTesting #ProductVision
