According to Wood Mackenzie, the upstream oil and gas sector has cut scope 1 & 2 emission intensity by 12% since 2017 (via reduced flaring, improved methane leak detection, and electrification). However, absolute emissions remain stagnant, potentially rising with increasing production demands. In the APAC region, significant strides in decarbonization are evident, but challenges persist. Had a great time this week seeing everyone at the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada #Methane Leadership Summit! Thanks everyone for the conversations! One of the topics we discussed on my panel was ambition - to decrease and verify methane intensity from oil and gas production. Sure, Canada was an early actor on methane. But will that credential still count if we're behind? Governments and industry need to keep ambition high to stay relevant in this fast evolving space. Some amazing action by US producers as of late: “The share of US supply certified as so-called RSG is estimated to hit 45% this year, up from 38% in 2023, according to a report by BloombergNEF.” If anyone has numbers for Canada, please share! I know there are several producers with low-methane certifications in BC's growing natural gas industry, and I would love to hear of examples from elsewhere.
