Wanted to share a post from Alison Reynolds and DETOUR Custom Apparel that speaks volumes about what we focus on...... alireynolds__ I want to start with the person who wrote this message knows I’m sharing it (without his name)- I don’t usually go around screenshotting peoples messages 😂 But for me, it was an important message. In business like in life, you win and you lose. When it’s your own business, I’d be lying to say that sometimes a loss is hard. People tend to forget that there are people behind the brand…and we are not distributors, we own it. This message is an example of why we continue to do what we do. We want to make it no-fuss for people to order custom kit. We also want them to feel comfortable with us to return if they don’t have the best experience. Our tag line of “Your Kit. Done Right” rings true always. No matter who we are dealing with, we put forward pricing and services that are consistent, flexible but are also there for long-term partnerships. We don’t BS to win, we put forward fair offerings from the get-go to avoid things like this happening. If you want your kit done right, deal with people who don’t only know kit but also understand business - and the impacts of over promising and not delivering. We can help x

𝐏𝐋 𝐕𝐒 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞. 1: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥: PL provides total command over price, branding, and packaging. However, because you're selling pre-existing things, selling wholesale reduces your control. 2:𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: PL requires a larger upfront outlay for marketing and product development. Wholesale may offer smaller profit margins but require less capital up front. 3: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Because of the demand for distinctive items, PL confronts intense competition. While there may be less competition in wholesale, pricing and sourcing must be done strategically. 𝙒𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪? PL can be your greatest option if you're a visionary and creative business. If you'd rather take a less risky approach with well-known brands, wholesale might be the way to go. Ultimately, each approach has advantages and disadvantages. It is necessary to evaluate your objectives.

💲 THE LOWEST COST IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST WAY TO BOOST YOUR PROFIT MARGINS💲 What?!?!? Let me explain.... A few years ago I was working with an activewear fashion line. When it came to sourcing, their strategy was "go with whoever has the lowest cost". The idea was that by giving their business to the supplier that has the lowest cost, they would be able to significantly pad their profit margins and have a cash flow healthy business. A few years into the business the math wasn't adding up. They were buying from the lowest cost supplier they could find, they were selling products at retail well above their costs- but every season seemed like a struggle to come up with the cash to pay for manufacturing and it seemed like it took their design team forrrrrevvvvver to finalize design specs, suppliers, and get set up for production. When I began looking at their sourcing strategies and internal processes- it was full of inefficient sourcing procedures and hidden costs associated with constantly seeking out the lowest priced supplier. They weren't saving money AND their sourcing strategy was causing delays in the product development process. In short, the lost profits and delays in getting to production was all stemming from ONE STANDARD that was set by the owners. In just a few months I: ✅ taught them how to source in a way that would guarantee their profit margins would be healthy ✅ simplified product development and production processes without sacrificing quality ✅ improved the efficiency of their design and production team by 15% ✅ improved the profit margin of their products by 33% (average increase) Getting down to the ROOT CAUSE of what was causing the issues with profitability and time to market started with a the BUSINESS PROFITABILITY + FOUNDATION ASSESSMENT. Once the assessment was done I was able to sit down with the owners and listen to what their vision for this company was. Together, we prioritized solutions that would help fill the cracks in their business' foundation AND help them work towards their business' goals. It's one of my favorite things to do, and I'd love the opportunity to do this for your business too! If you'd like to learn more about the Business Profitability + Foundation Assessment, please send me a message. #operations #fashion #profit

Today, let’s talk Retail Pricing—The Key to Maximizing Profits 💰 In my previous post I mentioned, fashion is more than creativity—it’s a business. It's one critical aspect that often gets overlooked by many fashion entrepreneurs is retail pricing. This isn't just about choosing numbers that look good; it's about strategic pricing that balances cost, value, and profit margins. Why is it so important? Retail pricing can make or break your brand. It affects how your customers perceive your products, your profit margins, and ultimately your business growth. It's an art, but it’s also a science, and getting it wrong can either scare customers away or leave you with shrinking profits. In my journey toward becoming a fashion business consultant, one key insight I've gained is the importance of knowing your cost structures and understanding your market positioning. Whether you're a high-end luxury brand or a more accessible ready-to-wear line, your pricing strategy must reflect your brand’s value proposition, while covering production costs and leaving room for profit. Here are some quick tips on how to get started with retail pricing: 📍Know your costs: This includes not just materials and labor, but overhead costs like shipping, marketing, and even storage. 📍Understand your customers: What are they willing to pay for your product? Your pricing should reflect the perceived value your target audience sees in your designs. Factor in profit margins: Ensure that after covering your costs, there’s enough left to reinvest in your business for growth. 📍Monitor the competition: While you shouldn't base your prices solely on what others are doing, understanding the market landscape will help you position your pricing correctly. I’m excited to hear your thoughts—how do you approach pricing in your fashion business? Drop your comments below, and let's discuss how we can elevate our brands through strategic pricing! Stay tuned for more business insights. Next up: Financial management in fashion.

The tricks and approaches that the fashion industry uses are by far the most advanced of any industry. They understand how to sell emotion, they understand how to create desire beyond the functional value that their garments offer. To the point that putting a certain type of logo on a piece of cloth can transform its perception and value. Learn from the fashion industry, they are decades ahead of most industries. #brandstrategy #branddevelopment #brandcommunication #brandadvice #branding #brand #SME #business #entrepreneur #founder

💼 BUSINESS ADVICE #3 💡 Your Business Will Die If You Compete On Price. If you compete solely on price, you're setting yourself up for failure. There will always be a competitor willing to undercut you by $10 or $100. WHEN that happens, you're left with two choices: Lower your price even further (losing money 💸) 2) Stay stagnant and lose customers (losing money 💸) But here's a third option I haven't mentioned 3) Sell On Brand, not just Product. Let me elaborate. Why do people choose Louis Vuitton over Macy's (or a cheaper brand)? LV has a powerful brand, while Macy's is more generic. Now, imagine if your service or product became the LV of your niche. Customers wouldn't compare you to others, and they'd flock to you. If You Want to Learn How to Build A Brand, stay tuned for a surprise tomorrow 😉 P.S. Make Sure To Follow For Daily Business Advice! #smallbusiness 💼

No MOQ’s = No business There are some very important reasons to launch with a reasonable bulk order. Having access to making your product business with an MOQ of 1, will not create a brand business that will thrive. Because you will fail to address some critical functions of your brand business. Minimum Order Quantities are essential for any business to operate (they know their bottom line so they can actually make a living) So if your fabric suppliers, garment manufacturers work to them, what makes you think your brand business is any different? 👉 You must prove (at least to yourself, first) that you understand your product and the market you are entering. 👉 You also need to understand that your brand business is scaleable. I don’t like to see brands create an over abundance of (potentially) unsaleable stock but if you only make 5 of something, you are essentially ensuring you will never know if your customer even wants it. There is a balance of course, when it comes to MOQ. What is too much (a pet hate for launching brands) and when it becomes too little to gain anything meaningful from it. What's your take on this?
