❎ GETEC Benelux was present at PETnology conference 2024.   Last June 12th and 13th, the PETnology Conference 2024 took place at lake Zurich in Rapperswil. This event is all about the latest PET packaging and machinery topics and regulations. Emiel Klootsema and Jan Willem Slijkoord have presented a new innovative analysis methodology to detect a specific Non-Intentional Added Substance (NIAS) in recycled PET based on the solution- and precipitation principle. Some takeaways: ✔ The drive for sustainability has clearly set in with clear focus on energy savings, material reduction and recycling. ✔ Due to the good recyclability of PET, more and more brand owners consider the use of PET instead of other packaging polymers. ✔ Proper recycling of PET waste products into food-compliant recycled PET demands proper analyses of NIAS and purity testing. Another successful delivery and commissioning! 🦾💙 In the northeastern region of Polen, in the city of Białystok, our Eggersmann partner Agrex-Eco Sp. z o.o. has delivered and commissioned three recycling machines. These machines are now an integral part of the new composting facility operated by PUHP LECH Sp. z o.o. Here’s how Eggersmann’s recycling technology supports the process: ➡️ Shredding: The Eggersmann TEUTON Z 60 universal shredder, processes green waste into material with fresh broken surfaces, perfect for microorganism colonization. ➡️ Composting: The shredded material, after the in-vessel composting process, will bearranged into windrows and turned by a BACKHUS A 55 windrow turner. Until 2020 we mainly focused on wet end and finishing. On the 25th and 26th of June, I had the pleasure of attending the Thermoforms Conference 2024, "Towards Circularity of PET Thermoformed Packaging," to meet with experts and leaders in the PET thermoforms industry. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss the challenges ahead, with PET being the primary circular polymer in the food industry, especially used in trays for protective atmosphere packaging. We discussed how PET trays have increased their recyclability in most European countries (for both bottle and tray sorting), and the challenges of multilayer trays in meeting the recyclability targets at scale for 2038, where only more than 80% recyclability will be accepted. There is still a long way to go, but no other tray material is better positioned in terms of recyclability at scale than PET, which already has market developments of up to 100% PCR in trays.
