Less than 24h to go to our next IOE Engagement and Impact Meet-Up online! We are looking forward to discussing Public engagement, research and rigour with leading experts, including the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) Co-Director Paul Manners, IOE - UCL's Faculty of Education and Society Director of Research Professor Lynn Ang, plus Professor Becky Taylor, Dr Mukdarut Bangpan and UCL Head of Public Engagement Helen Craig. The session is of particular interest to researchers, practitioners, policymakers, REF and engagement and impact professionals, and it is especially relevant considering REF 2029 emphasis on rigour in research impact. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion. If you have not had the chance to register, do take a look at our website where we will post in the next few days a full briefing in the training and events section, sharing key takeaways from the event to amplify the benefits to the research community. In the meantime, read earlier briefings to catch up with insights from our recent engagement and impact events, featuring, among others, the Department for Education Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Russell Viner, and representatives from the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council.

Struggling with the REF? If so, then you may be interested in learning how to navigate international #policy engagement and the #Research Excellence Framework (REF) in an interactive #masterclass. Date: 23 May 2024 Time: 15:00-17:00 (BST) Location: UCL's Haldane Room, Wilkins Building (North) [REF is a research impact #evaluation of British Higher Education Institutions; the REF outcomes are used to inform the allocation of around £2 billion per year of public #funding for #universities’ research. The REF objectives are to: - provide accountability for public #investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits of this investment; - provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks, for use in the higher education sector and for public information; and - inform the selective allocation of funding for research more info at: https://lnkd.in/ew9ShiKA] Overview: UCL research and expertise inform policymaking across the globe, and engaging with policymakers is one of our primary avenues for impact. This process, however, is not always straightforward, and setting up successful initiatives can be challenging. With a particular focus on the challenges of international policy engagement, this masterclass will offer practical insights for the development process of REF #casestudies, from inception to panel evaluation, and allow you to reflect on your own experiences working with policy actors across the globe. The masterclass will include case studies from: Prof Michael Walls (case study): Strengthening institutions in the Global South to address urgent development challenges: co-production of research and policy in Somaliland and Sierra Leone. Prof Courtenay Norbury, Vice-Dean Research, Brain Sciences: Experience of serving as a REF Panel member. Learning outcomes: By the end of the session, you will be able to: - Understand the REF process, its rules and requirements. - Understand what makes an impactful policy engagement activity that combines research excellence and societal impact - Identify the key factors that contribute to a robust REF case study and what to consider early on in your project. - Conceptualise and develop a REF case study based on your past or planned policy engagement activities. With an increase in community-centred and participatory research approaches in academic research, many questions are raised about valuing different sources of knowledge, how PE practitioners (PEPs) should support diverse communities involvement in active research as active knowledge makers, and how to facilitate an equitable research environment. On Wednesday 5 June, the Next Steps team Faye Watson and Deanne Naula will be hosting a workshop focusing on how we can support both communities and academic researchers develop a more diverse research landscape through collaborative research. In this session we'll discuss: - What are the challenges /advances with the development of these approaches within the current system? - How do we recalibrate the power dynamics in traditional research to create and maintain equitable practices for community centred research? - How do we make space for research with communities to be included in academia. - What is the role of PEPs in these approaches? How do we pivot? - What support do PEPs have for working with marginalised collaborators that are usually involved in these in depth ways? We will be joined by 3 speakers who will share their experiences in collaborative research both within and outside academia and how they are challenging the normative practices that can create inequities. The session will be facilitated by Lewis Hou of Science Ceilidh. The workshops are targeted primarily at Public Engagement Professionals working at a strategic level. We define this as having some experience of working to create structural changes to support engagement and the ability to test and implement changes for this.
