Guyana a fascinating country with much to offer both residents and visitors.Guyana, is a country on the northern coast of South America, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east. As part of the Guianas—a region that includes Suriname and French Guiana—Guyana is characterised by dense rainforests, savannas, rivers, and a narrow coastal plain where most of the population resides. The capital and largest city is Georgetown, which serves as the main port, while other significant towns include Linden, New Amsterdam, and Bartica. Historically, Guyana was inhabited by indigenous peoples before being colonised by the Dutch in the 17th century and then becoming a British colony in the early 19th century. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on May 26, 1966, and became a republic on February 23, 1970. The country has a diverse population of approximately 790,000 people, comprising ethnic groups such as Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Amerindians, and those of mixed heritage. English is the official language, but various other languages and dialects, including Guyanese Creole, are also spoken. Guyanese culture is a rich blend of Indian, African, Amerindian, Chinese, and European influences, evident in its festivals, cuisine, music, and religious practices. The country's natural attractions, such as the towering Kaieteur Falls and vast, untouched rainforests, highlight its rich biodiversity and ecological significance.
