Hey Hamilton, it’s time for a serious conversation about our future. Our Long-Term Plan is now open for consultation, and we need your help. It’s easy to make claims about wasteful spending, pet projects, or unnecessary costs, but we need you to be specific about what you want Council to do less, or more, of. What do you love, or not, about the services we provide? And we need you to share your voice through our website – comments here won’t be considered for decision-making. Councils across the country are facing significant challenges – the situation we’re in is not unique. Inflation, interest and looking after the city’s $6 billion of assets – these are the things that drive costs, and rates, up. Read the Long-Term Plan, and give us your feedback ↓ https://hubs.ly/Q02pS29x0

We are proud to highlight the work of Alex Barrett, Corporate Real Estate Manager, at The Heritage Group. Alex wrote the following regarding what public administration concepts have translated to his current career: "I believe I've had two large takeaways from the program that have helped me professionally. The first, I developed a better understanding of the way government works at the administrative agency level. In my previous, and current, jobs I deal a lot with local and state government agencies (IDEM, USACE, Zoning Boards, IURC, IEDC, Etc.). Better understanding how these agencies work and relate to each other and the general public has helped expand my ability to work with them. I can provide some pretty specific examples on this if you'd like but most will center around coordination with local governments on zoning issues related to our infrastructure construction company and navigating those (sometimes) rough terrains, or they will center around creative ways we work with IDEM/USACE on resolving wetland/WOTUS issues." "The second biggest takeaway I had with the #MPA program was data analysis. This hasn't been something I've consistently used, but when I have issues arise that require analysis of data and what it means, it's nice to have the experience I gained in the program in my back pocket." In regard to the most valuable or memorable information he took from the program, Alex cited "the general understanding of public agency structure and a more detailed look at how they function." #publicadministration #policy

I gave an interview to The Mail earlier. Not because I'm a fan, but (aside from a bit of self-promotion) it's important to take opportunities to improve the public understanding of the planning system. In this case, I was speaking about the Green Belt / Grey Belt. The article published in The Times yesterday, attacking the planning industry, particularly public sector town planners, was abhorrent. Lindsey Richards FRTPI has rightly rebuked the claims made in the article on behalf of the Royal Town Planning Institute. The new chancellor has correctly identified the planning industry as a catalyst for economic growth. To achieve that, we need resources and recognition. We also need a sensible discussion about the Green Belt! #Planning #GreenBelt

❗ The Royal Town Planning Institute's response to DLUHC's Accelerated Planning Service consultation is now out. Decision making times clearly need to improve, but we question whether targeting one aspect of planning services - non-EIA major commercial developments - will bring about the systemic, sustained improvements to the system and its capacity that we want to see. Indeed, there are some major risks in doing so. Nice to see a step towards cost recovery for some planning application fees, though...
