It is our commonalities, not our differences, that bond us. In early April, I spent a week with nine veterans, in the mountains of Northwestern Montana. Our group was rather small, compared to past groups - 4 of us were hunting, the remaining 5 were support (guides, photographers, etc). Because of this, we got close, quick. Patrol Base Abbate is structured so that members work through guided discussions each evening, in an effort to create new bonds. But by the evening of the first night, we had made bonds and were having discussions that typically weren’t seen until the end of the third day. Many of those discussions were difficult. From women in combat to COVID mandates to disability ratings to PFT scales - if there was a contentious and difficult question to ask, we asked it. But never once did we fight. We never raised our voices. We never stormed out on one another. We heard each other out. We disagreed. And we moved on. Since returning back to our “normal” lives, we’ve stayed in close contact, talking nearly daily, if only to send one another a meme. That is what makes #veterans different. While we may not look the same or worship the same gods or vote for the same individuals, we are one, because we are veterans. A Special Message on this July 4th from AHC President, Julie Broadway: Birthdays, after a certain age, are less about the cake and candles and more about assessment and reflection. Accomplishments and disappointments are examined, hopefully pointing a path forward toward more of the former and less of the latter. You might find this a rather somber open to an essay on the occasion of our common birthday – Independence Day. Be assured there is much to celebrate. There will be parades all across the nation. In many instances, the celebrations will be led and attended by a faithful, brave, and spirited four-legged partner: the horse. It is on this point that we would like to reflect upon this year. Over the course of 248 birthdays, from George Washington’s horse Nelson riding fearlessly into Revolutionary war battles to providing honors to the fallen at Arlington Cemetery, horses have been woven into this country’s history. Horses have tilled our land for food and provided transport from everything from postal services to operational partners in times of war. As the nation evolved so did the role of the horse. The transition from physical labor — using horsepower to leisure activities — marked a significant shift in our relationship with these magnificent creatures. Consequently, the discussion around them has shifted from what horses need to do to support the rider or the spectator to what we need to do to support the horse. Abstract When martial law is in effect, the military commander of an area or country has unlimited authority to make and enforce laws. Martial law is justified when civilian authority has ceased to function, is completely absent, or has become ineffective. Further, martial law suspends all existing laws, as well as civil authority and the ordinary administration of justice. In the United States, martial law may be declared by proclamation of the President or a State governor, but such a formal proclamation is not necessary. This Memorial Day, I'm reflecting on on the choice between bravery and passivity. As proud first generation Nigerian-American and patriot in the TRUE sense of the word, I am immensely grateful for the service of those we honor today. When faced with the choice between bravery and passivity, they chose bravery. They prioritized country over their own safety. Most of us aren't brave enough to make that choice. As we honor them today - let's ask ourselves what choices between bravery and passivity we ARE brave enough to make? Are we brave enough to be upstanders when we witness injustice? Are we brave enough to advocate for those who go unheard? Are we brave enough to come to the defense of people or ideas that might be unpopular when we know it's the right thing to do? Are we brave enough to rock a boat that needs rocking? Are we brave enough to give some feathers the ruffling they deserve? To become fully self-actualized, there has to be something we're willing to risk for something that matters more than our comfort. Where can choosing bravery over passivity make a difference that matters more than your comfort in your sphere of influence? No matter how seemingly small or insignificant, the impact of choosing bravery is always relatively big when compared with the impact of choosing passivity.
