On this Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor Florida’s Indigenous communities and their deep connection to our state’s waterways and ecosystems. Florida's state parks, like Jonathan Dickinson, which are caregivers to Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Loxahatchee, are not just recreational spaces—they’re vital for preserving cultural and natural resources. As we reflect on Indigenous wisdom, let’s commit to protecting these precious resources: 1)Practice Responsible Recreation: Respect water sources and habitats when visiting parks. 2)Join Clean-Up Efforts: Participate in volunteer days to help maintain our waterways. 3)Support Indigenous Stewardship: Engage with Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. 4)Educate Others: Spread awareness about the importance of water conservation. Let’s honor Indigenous Peoples Day by safeguarding Florida’s natural beauty for generations! 💧🌴 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #WaterConservation #FloridaStateParks #Sustainability #CulturalHeritage

What can National Landscapes do for the nation? Big Chalk is a shining example. National Landscapes own no land - what they do, brilliantly, is bring together partners under a landscape scale vision, coordinating funding bids and effort, and they deliver. The Big Chalk area covers 30% of England, partners and landowners united in their ambition to deliver nature restoration on a massive scale. And what does nature restoration mean? It's rewiggled rivers that provide flood alleviation, natural filtration and better riparian habitats; it's more trees - but the right trees, in the right places to maximise habitat and minimise erosion; it's creating wildlife corridors, stepping stones and buffer zones so species can naturally expand their areas; it's people, rewilded, improved access, with a greater feeling of connection and increased wellbeing. This is what National Landscapes can do when resourced. Their knowledge of their local areas; their local connections and their ambition are unmatched. This is the future, it has to be.
Today, we celebrate 75 years since the visionary Act of Parliament that gave us National Landscapes (then AONBs), National Parks and National Trails. These iconic places inspire us, sustain us, and remind us why we must work together for nature's recovery. This milestone isn’t just about recognising the past—it’s about deciding our collective future. The chalk and limestone landscapes of southern and eastern England are alive with activity, from saving rare wildlife to restoring lost habitats to helping communities solve challenges such as flooding. It's a great start, but much more needs to be done. We can't recover nature by focusing only in our protected landscapes. Equally, we can't recover nature if we fail to recognise their unique circumstances, opportunities and challenges. It matters to us all that they are supported to make their best contribution. Read our new blog and join us both in celebrating the Act and in helping decide its long-term legacy: https://lnkd.in/eEstwAHb #75YearsOfProtection #StrongerTogether #NationalLandscapes #NationalParks #NationalTrails #NatureRecovery #ProtectedLandscape #NationalLandscapes #NationalParks #NationalTrails #NatureRecovery #PeopleAndNature #WildlifeForAll #NatureForEveryone #RewildingCommunities #BiodiversityForAll #NatureEngagement #SustainableCommunities #BigChalk #BigChalkConference #NatureRecovery #LNRS #EcosystemRestoration #Biodiversity #SustainableLandscapes #ClimateAction #GreenInfrastructure #WildlifeConnectivity #Collaboration #LocalConservation #RestoreNature #WildlifeRecovery #NatureRestoration #BiodiversityAction #ProtectOurNature David Hoccom Simon Smith National Landscapes Association Ruth Colbridge Kent Downs Landscape Polly Martin John Watkins Madeleine Lundholm Bruce Winney South Downs National Park Authority Chilterns National Landscape Surrey Hills National Landscape Cotswolds National Landscape Mendip Hills AONB Dorset National Landscape Pasture for Life Plantlife International Soil Association Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs National Trust NFU Mutual Environment Agency Butterfly Conservation Bath & North East Somerset Council Kent County Council Siôn McGeever National Trails UK

New research out today shows that nature in #NationalParks is in crisis. 🏞️ Far from being shining examples of conservation success, their rivers are polluted and special habitats degraded. 🥀 🦋 But things can and must change if we are to halt nature's decline by 2030. 🍃 The government must strengthen legal protections and increase resourcing and National Parks must put nature recovery at the heart of their work. Read the report and take action for our Parks 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGYfsRYM

The BBI team wishes you a Happy Earth Day!🌍 Today celebrates and honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the importance of protecting Earth's natural resources for future generations to come! Here are a couple ways you can help out today in the local Tampa Bay area. ---> Beach Cleanups: Organize or join a beach cleanup event. Given Tampa Bay's proximity to the coast, this can be a highly impactful way to contribute to environmental conservation. ---> Park Restoration: Participate in park restoration projects. Many local parks may have Earth Day events focused on planting native vegetation, removing invasive species, or maintaining trails. ---> Community Gardens: Volunteer at community gardens or urban farms. These spaces often rely on volunteers for tasks such as planting, weeding, and harvesting. ---> Tree Planting: Join a tree planting initiative. Look for organizations or local government agencies hosting tree planting events to help increase green spaces and combat climate change. #EarthDay #SaveThePlanet #GoGreen

Sometimes it can feel overwhelming when you see the challenges that the natural world faces. The last 50 years have seen significant species loss and disappearing habitat. On our watch once common species are struggling – commons toads down 68% in just 30 years and diverse habitats have been vanishing with 97% of haymeadows lost since the 1930s. That is why reading a piece about five success stories in The Observer (https://lnkd.in/e4PKVG6C) was so uplifting. Positive change is possible and it’s happening across the UK. I’ve been lucky enough to help set up a new community nature reserve this year, working in partnership with our local authority. The act of doing something to make a difference feels so empowering and in less than a year we’ve collectively already made a difference in the story of Charlcombe Community Nature Reserve (https://lnkd.in/eksg7-Pz). We can help nature recover and flourish but its going to take a combination of policy interventions, conservation organisations, businesses and communities coming together.

Dorchester County, South Carolina, is home to diverse ecosystems, including swamps, blackwater rivers, bottomland hardwood forests, longleaf pine savannahs and tidal marshes. Residents and visitors can partake in outdoor recreational activities across the county’s vast park system, trails, waterways and forests. The county, however, has undergone significant growth and development in recent years, and has embraced the challenge of managing rapid urban growth while also trying to mitigate environmental damage and degradation. In 2023, Dorchester County Government, along with Weston & Sampson, Audubon South Carolina, and the Dorchester County Conservation and Greenbelt Advisory Commission, collaborated with the community and Dorchester County Council to create the first-ever Dorchester County Greenbelt Master Plan.
