Something has been bothering my mind for several weeks now — internship. Yes! As a fourth year undergraduate student of chemical and process engineering, I have had the opportunity to carry out internship twice as stipulated by my university in the past two academic calendar years. But why am I reflecting on internship? Well, internship practice is the best time to ask yourself the question that I asked myself a few weeks ago “Is this what I really want to do or be for the next 10 to 40 years?” Internship gives you a glimpse of how actually your "dream career/field" is/will turn out to be. It's the time you realise that you were spot on to love and be passionate about the field or you were just lusting over it perhaps bandwagon or other reasons best known to you — it's when you get to know that you and that field incompatible. I have no doubt that internship plays a huge role in our future careers but it's also important for one to choose their internship opportunities wisely–to align with their long term career goals, vision and values. Let that internship opportunity you (blindly or knowingly) take be your "love at first sight". ______________________________ Lets connect and network. Update: 11 March 2023 Internship Sharing Gas and Oil. It is frightening to move to a new town. It is bone-chilling to start a new job. It is terrifying to meet new people. Can you imagine doing all three at once? As scary as it might sound, these challenges are inevitable, especially for students that will undergo internship. Education provides skills and on the other hand, internship is essential to provide invaluable insights, general workplace exposure, practical and professional skills in the age of Industry 4.0, and best work practices in the world of engineering. This sharing session manage to provide students with the necessary tools for overcoming obstacles which they will face in their industrial training. A big thanks to our speaker, Qimmy Daniella Binti Sabri, who had gave us a lot of useful insights regarding internship, the committees that made this programme possible and the participants that have engaged in this sharing session. I am grateful that I can take part in this programme as a publicity comittee and a participant. Hopefully, this programme is able to give a little bit exposure to those who are about to perform their industrial training.

In early August, RISE (Relevant Internships for Successful Employment) college sophomore Scholars delivered presentations about their professional and networking experiences over the summer to the Evanston Scholars community (Evanston Scholars staff, fellow Scholars, & career partners). Here, William Fogue Wambo (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) talks about his internship at Energy CX. What professional opportunity did you gain over summer 2024? WILLIAM: My internship was with Energy CX, an energy sustainability and procurement company. This is a family-owned and managed company with the mission to educate all companies on how to save energy efficiently. My position as a summer intern at Energy CX demanded an abundance of analysis and research within the lead generation and market intelligence departments. I quickly needed to learn how every property, or company used its energy. I determined which companies qualified and were ideal customers for our company. What did you gain from your professional opportunity? WILLIAM: This was my first internship in a corporate setting and this experience solidified my interest in renewable energy. I am interested in renewable energy as a subcategory of civil engineering. This is the area I want to get into, sourcing energy. I want to head down the route of construction management. I want to see how that side plays out and weigh my options from the experiences I gained with Energy CX.

Being open to new connections can lead to great things. As an example, today we meet Ace, who landed an internship from a cold LinkedIn message: “While searching for an internship for the summer after my sophomore year, I received a LinkedIn message from a recruiter telling me about an opportunity for an internship with Dominion Energy. Thanks to this networking software, I was able to secure the internship and have an amazing experience! From this experience I have learned how valuable and beneficial networking softwares can be.” -Ace Coffel, Previous Electrical Engineering Intern at Dominion Energy Sometimes a simple message can make all the difference for someone! Throughout the weeks while on my "fascinating" remote job and internship search, I've noticed that many companies have been asking for certifications in addition to higher education degrees that we possess, something that we graduate students tend not to have as we work on doing other internships, writing papers, and other forms of research. My question for my LinkedIn connections is For someone getting into the energy systems engineering and renewables field, what are some good certificate programs we can do to bolster our resumes? Any resources in the comments would be helpful.

𝐆𝐇𝐃'𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩/ 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 GHD, in partnership with Forage, developed a self-paced Virtual Internship where you get to explore what a career in GHD's Engineering teams looks like. In the simulation I: ◾Completed a job simulation involving an options analysis for different rail alignment options for the GHD transport team. ◾Used design brief documents and preliminary designs to formulate cost and construction time estimates for different rail alignment options. ◾Investigated and compared the impact of each alignment option on stakeholders, the environment and design outcomes. ◾Compared each alignment option using a weighted options analysis spreadsheet and communicated key findings and recommendations to the client in a technical memorandum. It was an interesting experience which equipped me with transferable and valuable professional skills! #Forage #GHD #VirtualInternship #CareerDevelopment
