Scientists Develop a Wheel That Can Change Stiffness to Overcome Obstacles Researchers have invented a wheel with adjustable stiffness that can adapt to different terrains, inspired by the surface tension of a liquid droplet. In a liquid droplet, as the cohesive force of the outermost liquid molecules increases, the net force pulling the liquid molecules inward also increases. This leads to high surface tension, resulting in the liquid droplet reverting to a circular shape from its distorted shape induced by gravitational forces. Similarly, the shape and stiffness of a wheel were controlled by changing the traction force at the outermost smart chain block. As the tension of the wire spokes connected to each chain block increased, the wheel characteristics reflected those of a general circular-rigid wheel, which has an advantage in high-speed locomotion on normal flat ground. Conversely, the modulus of the wheel decreased as the tension of the wire spoke decreased, and the wheel was easily deformed according to the shape of obstacles. The wheel can switch between a rigid, circular shape for smooth surfaces and a soft, deformable shape for rolling over obstacles, making it suitable for various environments. The wheel's stiffness is controlled by adjusting the tension in a smart chain structure along its outer edge, which is connected to a centre hub via spokes. The wheel's capabilities were demonstrated in a four-wheeled vehicle and a two-wheeled wheelchair system, showing its potential for use in mobile robots and transportation systems. Monumo , a technology business that couples deeptech AI innovation with traditional engineering expertise to redesign the electric drive unit, has been awarded nearly £1 million in funding from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Monumo’s 3D Generative-AI Technology (3D-GAIT), will automate design generation, simulation, and evaluation. Working in #collaboration with electric motor research specialists, University of Nottingham's Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group, and global drive train experts, hofer powertrain, this technology will meet a crucial market need for motor design optimisation. This innovative combination aims to transform products from user-dependent to self-interacting. Thyagarajan, who has a background in aviation technology, founded Foviatech in 2018 after working at the German Aerospace Centre. The company now boasts a global team and is expanding into markets in APAC, EMEA, and the US defence sector. Foviatech's smart seat technology uses graphene-based sensors to automatically adjust to the occupant's posture, collecting biometric data for enhanced comfort and safety. Additionally, their AI-controlled digital twin platform, FOVIAR, improves quality assurance processes in the transport industry.
