To all new interns, If they are underpaying you in the name of ‘experience’, tell them ‘experience’ doesn’t pay bills. Absolutely nobody deserves to do a LOT of work, stay late nights, work weekends and go over extreme stress just for the sake of experience. Don’t let this be how you define your entry into workplaces. Be honest to your work and demand better

I have been thinking: (a lot obviously lol x) that how do businesses - particularly SME's with small staff numbers connect to education facilities? Well, Lisa Coleman at Rocket Freight is making it happen. I rang her with an idea - let us help pathway vocational students (students who take a subject in their timetable focused on looking at work) at Green Bay High School into logistics as a career. Catrin Hughes the HOD of careers was right on board with the idea and organised a space/time and enthusiasm. Right, Lisa said - I have some fellow companies in this area that I will ring and see if we can all work together to come and talk about all the opportunities that is in the logistics industry. I do not offer jobs in all the areas the logistics industry covers but I can get others on board who offer job areas I do not. Now I know - this takes time and effort. Why is Lisa interested in doing this? Because she has taken on two ex-Green Bay High School students who have been great employees. She sees the value in investing in the potential of our young people. The event will run on the 6th of May where the young people can interact in small groups with the employers. The idea is then that the students who are interested, have the possibility of doing a work shadowing placement - 1-2 hours in the workplace/area of their choice. If they show commitment to this - it develops into a Gateway placement possibility and then maybe full-time work or ?? It is trying things and working together to see what works. Employers can work together to support these ideas - and do not have to do it alone. Exciting times.

We’re hiring - but these jobs won’t be for everyone! We’ve done a lot of work on our values (which the team themselves came up with) and the behaviours that underpin these. They give us a roadmap for how to behave and what we want our culture to be. We’re working hard to embed them and to call each other out if we don’t live up to them. Our team is our greatest strength and we’ve done a lot of work to get to where we are now. So when someone new joins we want to ensure they are the correct fit. We also want people to join the team that are going to strengthen it and add to the sum of our whole, rather than detract from what we’ve built. Whilst a trainee / school leaver might not have any hands on accounts experience they can still uphold and live by our values. PLAY YOUR PART Share your knowledge Always think of others Be supportive Be adaptable to change Communicate effectively BE YOUR BEST SELF Have pride in what you do Commit to output Take responsibility Have a positive attitude Be approachable CHALLENGE CLIENTS Hold clients accountable Educate and inform Keep things simple Be there when it matters Put yourself in others’ shoes These might sound a bit over the top / cheesy but some people might think the same of our core purpose - Making Lives Better. But we really do make lives better and we see it day in day out - and clients tell us too. These values underpin this core purpose. If these don’t resonate with you and you’re looking for a job then we’re probably not the right fit for you - but there will be plenty of other firms out there that will be. If however this sounds right up your street then it may well be a match made in heaven! If that’s the case send on your CV and a short video introducing yourself (if you can) A reminder of the roles and the contact details in the comments below
