We supply top-quality drinking water to 2.3 million people across the south east of England. Last week, we published our fourth Climate Change Adaptation Report, highlighting how we will adapt to climate change to keep our customers' taps flowing. Our report sets out the 10 key headline risks we foresee as a business, mitigation we’ve already undertaken, and further work we plan to do to reduce these. These 10 key risks are all linked, but fall into three main areas: •Water scarcity. •Resilience of our infrastructure. •Water quality deterioration. 📣 The next government must protect our communities from climate change. Every part of the UK will see extreme weather events due to our changing climate. 55% of homes already experience overheating, and 1.9 million live in areas with a significant risk of flooding – and this is predicted to double by 2050. Once elected, our next government can act decisively to combat this, and build resilience into our communities ensuring they are safe and comfortable to live in. UKGBC recommends 4 key policies that government can enact to make this happen: 📋 Climate change adaptation must be at heart of decision making, and the National Adaptation Plan must be urgently refreshed. 🏡 Nature-based solutions should be prioritised in our towns and cities, and government should consult the Urban Greening Factor to improve green infrastructure in urban areas. 🌳 Increased tree cover in urban areas, aiming for a canopy cover of 25% by 2030 to improve connection with nature, air quality, and temperature regulation. 🔨 Investment in resilient retrofits as part of the national retrofit programme to add adaptation measures such as shutters, sun blinds or flood barriers. This is just one of the opportunities the next government has to transform the places people live, work, and play, and unlock numerous benefits for communities across the country. Adaptation of water services to climate change impacts The occurrence of climate change is recognized globally. Mitigation programmes have been introduced in many nations, as well as internationally through a number of agreements. Locally, operators of water services have had to assess the impacts and options for responding to the effects of climate change, some of which are slow and long-term, while others are acute, arising from extreme weather events and changes ISO 24566-2:2024 Drinking water, wastewater and stormwater systems and services — Adaptation of water services to climate change impacts — Part 2: Stormwater services Preview at https://lnkd.in/dWZyQvWU Available at https://lnkd.in/dGGZZNwp and National Standards Bodies (see list https://lnkd.in/dNKdkE-V) #SDG6 #ISO #ISOstandards #water #wastewater #drinkingwater #stormwater

Water risk is a reallity.
Mexico City and 11 other cities at risk of running out of water according to WRI. "The biggest factor that makes a city vulnerable isn't climate change, it's water management." We must prioritize water efficiency and reuse as a business imperative.

Prioritizing Green Initiatives for Sustainable Development Focusing only on economic growth while ignoring climate change isn't effective. Wealth alone won't shield us from climate impacts like flooding. To address climate change, we need a significant, coordinated effort. If enough people advocate for it, policymakers will need to prioritize sustainability and adapt market rules. When major climate events occur, such as severe flooding, it shows that large-scale action is possible if the public demands it. #sustainability #climatechange #greenfuture #greeninitiatives #askforaction
