Recording foley involves not only sourcing the right props but also finding an artist to sync with the prop. How closely can you match the sound, and how deeply have you delved into its intricacies? Consider a man running across an expanse of land. What type of shoes is he wearing? How fast is he moving? What is he stepping on? What's the surface of the ground like? If there are any inconsistencies on his path, how does his step sound when he encounters a pebble, a puddle, or a stick of wood? Does anything crackle? Does the weather change, or is the environment progressively shifting? Would he sound different as he goes steeper or deeper while walking or pacing? Stop tapping on the microphone. It does not make a pleasant noise and is not what that microphone is set up to do. If the mic isn't on, the engineer is forced to turn it on while you're tapping on it and then re-adjust to your voice. You can effectively use Soundtoys Decapitator using this guideline: Drive: 1:1 for subtle; 3:1 to 5:1 For extreme distortion, push the ratio to 5:1 and beyond, but be cautious of clipping and harshness. Tone: 1:1 for warmth (Low); 2:1 to 3:1 for brightness (High). Set the Tone control toward Low with a 1:1 to 2:1 ratio if you want to enhance bass elements Mix: 50:50 for moderate, If you're pushing higher Drive settings, dial back the wet signal to 30%-40% to maintain clarity while benefiting from saturation. Punish Mode: This adds extra aggression and saturation, 2:1 to 5:1 depending on intensity needed. By carefully adjusting these ratios, you can effectively use Soundtoys Decapitator to bring warmth, punch, and distortion to your mix while keeping control over saturation levels.
