October is National Co-op Month, a time to reflect on the critical role electric cooperatives play, especially in times of crisis. When Hurricane Helene hit, it knocked out power for 1.25 million South Carolinians, including 425,000 electric co-op members. The storm damaged 5,000+ power poles, toppled transmission lines, and left 80+ substations offline. For many, Helene was the most devastating storm in decades. But our 19 member-owned co-ops responded immediately, showcasing the cooperative principle of "Cooperation among Cooperatives." Every S.C. cooperative deployed line crews, with 12 co-ops sending mutual aid: Berkeley Electric, Black River Electric, Coastal Electric, Edisto Electric, Fairfield Electric, Horry Electric, Lynches River Electric, MPD Electric, Palmetto Electric, Santee Electric, Tri-County Electric, and York Electric. Santee Cooper and Duke Energy Corporation also played critical roles in re-energizing co-op substations. Help arrived from 23 states, with crews as far as California, Maine, and Texas joining the effort. Our materials supplier, CEEUS, Inc., delivered 20-30 truckloads of equipment daily—rivaling the response to Hurricane Hugo in 1989. This massive recovery effort underscores the power of co-ops working together to serve their members. During #NationalCoopMonth, we celebrate the dedication and resilience of Central’s 19 co-ops. End of Day Report: As of 10:00 am this morning, there were still roughly 873,000 customers without service (1.39 million restored). Projections are still that 500,000 in the Centerpoint coverage area will remain without power going in to next week. 18 staging sites remain open and operating cross the Greater Houston area to address the breadth of the hurricane’s impact and adequately host trucks, equipment and supplies needed across the footprint. Centerpoint expected to stand up two additional sites starting today. Centerpoint has requested an additional 1,000 mutual assistance personnel to assist with restoration efforts. Crews are starting to arrive and are being onboarded and provided work orders as they become available (Quanta & Oncor). They are also in discussion with Entergy regarding possibility of Entergy crews transitioning to assist with CenterPoint restoration efforts. Centerpoint has deployed 11 mobile generation units and 6 additional units are being deployed. Theu continue assessing further sites for the potential deployment of mobile generation units to provide temporary power restoration to certain critical facilities, such as: cooling centers, healthcare facilities, first responder locations, senior centers, and educational centers. Oncor is sending an additional 4 mobile generation units expected to arrive in Houston today. PLEASE NOTE: There have been multiple instances of linemen attempting to work and restore power having guns pulled on them and being harrased. This impedes their ability to get power restored and puts lives at risk that are working tirelessly for our benefit. Please let them get their job done so that we can tackle to real issues after all the power is restored. CNP tracking map as of 12noon on 12 July’24 and reports indicate about 60% progress on power restoration in Houston/Harris service area. Good to see this happening even though my location has only today changed to “partial” energized at site yet. It would be handy to see how the remedy metrics and what qty of failures needed to be implemented such as poles, wire, transformers, towers, stations plotted onto gismap tracker to get a better storm repair look back midway to goal. Perhaps age and conditions of infrastructure could be evaluated for previous and foreseen future improvement needs along with any correlation with storm path and wind loads measured if known. Another point is how standalone sites can equip with temporary power. Since Harvey the portable gen set and ancillary kit has been a life saver and paid off over past 4 yrs storm related outages. Investment was about $1,200 to include: 6000w power pack, cables, 4-5 gal plastic fuel cans and fasteners and hold downs. Took some work, planning and sacrifice. Appreciate CNP to get community through Beryl and prior events. Having worked in energy and power infrastructure for many years will attest that this irequires careful attention to perform safely.

🧑🚒👮🧑⚕️ In an emergency, we all assume that 911 operators will be there to send help. And in the vast majority of cases they are. But sometimes no one answers - several 911 outages are reported every year in the US. The most recent occurred last week in Texas and Louisiana as a result of Hurricane Beryl. And such failures can be costly: for instance in 2020, an equipment problem at T-Mobile left 23,000 911 calls unconnected, resulting in a $19.5M settlement. Of course there are many different causes for these events, and loss of power can contribute. Cellular system equipment always has backup power in case utility power goes out - but what if the backup fails? This is just one reason why remote battery monitoring is essential for all critical systems. Addressing the Public Utility Commission of Texas, Wells took personal accountability and apologized to customers for the prolonged outages. CenterPoint plans to trim more trees near power lines, improve customer communications, and hire a new executive for emergency response coordination. The hurricane impacted over 2 million East Texas homes and businesses, exacerbating public frustration with CenterPoint following previous blackouts in May. CenterPoint will also offer backup generation to critical care facilities, as recommended in a 2009 report after Hurricane Ike. Additionally, the company will conduct an internal investigation and seek third-party consultation on emergency preparedness. A new cloud-based outage map is set to launch by August 1, and the utility has doubled its vegetation management workforce. Earlier this year, a decayed utility pole fell during high winds in the Panhandle, causing power lines to ignite the largest wildfire in Texas history, burning over one million acres and killing two people. More recently, Hurricane Beryl's relatively weak winds caused significant damage in Houston, leaving over two million households without power. In the extreme heat that followed, at least three people died from heat exposure, and many were without air-conditioning for a week, prompting the opening of a temporary hospital due to a surge in patients. The main issue has been an overreliance on crisis response rather than prevention. By shifting the focus from crisis response to preventive actions, the resilience of the electrical grid can be significantly improved, reducing the likelihood of failures during severe weather events.

Lots of reports of long lines at gas stations in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, but how did charging infrastructure hold up? ⛽ 🚗 🚗 🚗 Surprisingly well ⚡ Despite nearly a third of the state dealing with power outages, our analysis finds that there was limited congestion before or after. Infrastructure was also quite resilient with only 15% of chargers still offline 48 hours after landfall and by 72 hours over 90% of chargers were back online. https://lnkd.in/ga653iqk
