Really important and timely article by James Coe in Wonkhe which should be essential reading for anyone interested in the burgeoning civic role of universities in the UK. The question I take from this: beyond the usual stakeholders, embedding of SDGs etc.is your civic mission actually touching the lives of people that don't have any connection to the university? This is the acid test of the civic movement in my view- admirably summed up in the statement that the point is not to bring the university to the world but the world to the university - will the university come to mean something in people's lives that have hitherto had little or nothing to do with it? Can it become again - or perhaps for the first time - a source of civic pride for the communities they purport to serve? Or will the civic agenda become increasingly inward looking, a question for universities only, lost in increasingly remote discussions of impact dashboards etc. This is exactly where things stand right now which is why this is such an important and timely intervention.
NEW on Wonkhe: James Coe heads back to Darlington and worries the civic agenda is becoming a bit too distant, a bit too middle class, and a bit too removed from the lives of people in the communities it seeks to impact. https://lnkd.in/dWfE3-gk "Universities cannot dictate the civic institutions they have. It’s not their role to tell their populations where to work, live, love, study, enjoy their time, and just hang out. The role of the civic university agenda is not to extend the university into the world but to extend the world into the university. The people who have the most to gain from universities being civically involved are often the least likely to know what the university is or what it does."

Durham College (DC) is celebrating its ranking as one of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges! DC placed 24th in the annual ranking and was highlighted as 2nd among medium-sized colleges for the number of paid student researchers and third for industry research income as a percentage of total college research income. DC also moved up in the ranking to fifth overall in both research partnerships and completed research projects. Powering DC’s research success is DC’s Office of Research Services, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ORSIE), which moved four of its five applied research centres into the new Centre for Innovation and Research (CIR), last year. In addition to centralizing DC’s research presence on campus, ORSIE continues to engage industry, business and community partners from the wider Region of Durham as it seeks out meaningful ways to collaborate in solving our community’s applied research challenges. ✨ Flashback Friday ✨ “Since universities are essentially designated as HSIs based on enrollment numbers (i.e. a minimum of 25% or more Latine undergraduate students), many HSIs do not seek an identity that is actively centered on serving students and run the risk of taking on a colorblind approach to serving their students (Ballysingh et al, 2017).” This week, we are sharing 2020-2021 Newkirk Fellow with RJS Marilyn Garcia's blog post addressing how the Newkirk Graduate Student Fellowship in Community-based Research with the Research Justice Shop has helped foster and strengthen the relationship between the University of California, Irvine, and the surrounding communities. In our social intelligence research, we found that online mentions about higher education make direct connections between the value of college and indisputable positive outcomes, such as: - Improved quality of life - Wider societal contributions - Increased individual opportunity for pursuing passions and purpose These outcomes directly match a liberal arts education. The term "liberal arts" doesn't resonate in the current market, but the outcomes do. Find ways to align your outcomes messaging with vocabulary your students understand to bridge the college value perception gap. https://lnkd.in/gj9ZSZ8T
