🌌 #Space#Economy requires #Space#Security – built by State Actors and Armed Forces 🌌
Reflecting on the key takeaways from the recent #ESPI Autumn Conference in Vienna, it’s clear that the growth of a robust Space economy is inseparable from establishing a resilient foundation in Space security. With rising geopolitical tensions and increased reliance on Space assets, the responsibility of safeguarding these critical infrastructures falls primarily on state actors and military.
Kudos to European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) for orchestrating this insightful event, which has underscored crucial points, including:
👾 Threat Preparedness: Space is now an Operational Domain where threats like GNSS jamming, cyber, RF interference and debris generation are rising. Addressing these threats requires a coordinated, multi-level approach and state-level commitment.
🎖 Military-Civil Integration: Effective cooperation between #commercial and governmental space sectors remains limited. However, a federated approach, combining civil and military resources, is essential for #resilience.
🚨 Urgency and Political Will: Despite ambitious #EU space strategy for Security and Defence, actions and fundings remain insufficient. Boosting capabilities to match declared ambitions is vital for Europe to keep pace in the global space arena.
The reality is that a robust space economy cannot stand alone; it must be protected and enabled by secure, sovereign space capabilities. This means aligning investments in both #defense and commercial sectors while fostering closer collaboration among European nations, NATO, and other strategic partners. By doing so, we can secure Europe’s space assets and also position the continent as a reliable partner in the global space economy.
A huge thanks to all #ESPI's Researchers (Gabriele Redigonda, Lina Pohl, Mathieu Bataille, Matija Rencelj, Marco Aliberti, Bianca Santi, Andrea Alberti, Lina Pohl, Jermaine F. Gutierrez) for their outstanding work in bringing these critical issues to the forefront. Space security is not just a supporting element; it is the very foundation for long-term growth and stability in the space economy.

The U.S. Space Force is exploring a #ZeroTrust approach to securing its space assets, which requires constant verification before granting access. This approach aims to address the #cybersecurity challenges posed by the growing number of commercial low-orbit satellites, by applying the same level of security to these third-party systems as to military space assets. The MIT Lincoln Laboratory A2/AD Systems and Technology Workshop provides an overview of the anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) challenges facing the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community.
The workshop examines systems, tactics, and technologies to counter these emerging threats across a range of domains. Mission areas covered by the workshop include base and fleet defense, contested airspace, space control, cyber warfare, ISR architectures and systems, communications, and undersea warfare.
'Spacecraft, satellites, and space-based systems all face cybersecurity threats that are becoming increasingly sophisticated and dangerous. With interconnected technologies controlling everything from navigation to anti-ballistic missiles, a security breach could have catastrophic consequences.'

The US military has launched the Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve (CASR), a groundbreaking initiative to bolster national security by integrating commercial space #technology#into military operations. This partnership aims to enhance #cybersecurity for military and commercial satellites, addressing the growing threat of #cyberattacks from hostile nation-states.
As space becomes crucial to global #infrastructure, the stakes are higher than ever. The CASR initiative seeks to leverage the advanced capabilities of the commercial sector while managing the associated risks, such as the potential #vulnerabilities of off-the-shelf components.
