First- Ever 'Commercial Space Walk In Humans History' On September 12, 2024, astronauts Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis completed the first-ever commercial spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission, marking a significant milestone in private space exploration. The spacewalk took place at an altitude of approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles), making it the highest EVA since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Isaacman, a billionaire and mission financier, and Gillis, a SpaceX engineer, exited the Crew Dragon capsule to test new, streamlined spacesuits developed by SpaceX. This EVA lasted about 30 minutes, during which they conducted mobility assessments while remaining attached to the spacecraft, as Crew Dragon lacks an airlock. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson hailed the event as a monumental advancement for the commercial space sector, emphasizing its role in fostering a sustainable U.S. space economy. The mission also serves as a precursor to future deep space travel, with the crew studying the effects of space radiation on their bodies during their five-day mission. **Bullet Points:- [1] Polaris Dawn astronauts complete first commercial spacewalk. [2] Tech billionaire returns to Earth after first private spacewalk [3] SpaceX astronauts complete first ever commercial space walk [4] Space X crew return to Earth following first commercial spacewalk **Main challenges faced during the Polaris Dawn spacewalk- **During the Polaris Dawn spacewalk, several significant challenges were encountered few among those were:- 1. **Lack of an Airlock**: The Crew Dragon capsule does not have an airlock, requiring the entire cabin to be depressurized for the spacewalk. This posed risks during the depressurization and repressurization processes, as any issues could compromise the spacecraft's integrity and the crew's safety]. 2. **Radiation Exposure**: The mission operated at high altitudes, exposing the crew to increased levels of cosmic radiation, particularly while traversing the lower Van Allen radiation belt. Although the new EVA suits provided some protection, the long-term effects of this exposure remain uncertain. 3. **Unfamiliar Equipment and Environment**: The EVA suits were newly developed and untested in real space conditions. The crew had to adapt to the rigidity of the suits, which made movement challenging, and manage the psychological stress of being tethered in the vastness of space. 4. **Inexperienced Crew**: Among the four crew members, only Jared Isaacman had prior space experience, and none had performed a spacewalk before. This lack of experience added an additional layer of risk to the mission. These challenges highlight the complexities of conducting commercial spacewalks and the importance of rigorous training and preparation. **Key Facts:- [1] First private spacewalk by Polaris Dawn [2] Polaris Dawn astronauts make first commercial spacewalk from SpaceX Dragon spaceship. Imagine navigating a bustling city where the streets are in constant flux, new skyscrapers rise without warning, and traffic rules seem optional. This metaphor paints a picture eerily similar to the current scenario unfolding in the lanes of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and beyond. Just like in an ever-evolving urban landscape, space is becoming increasingly crowded. Satellites zip by at tremendous speeds, their orbits crisscrossing with a dizzying complexity that could rival any city's rush hour. As we propel ourselves into a new epoch of space exploration—marked by the deployment of satellite constellations that enhance global communications and the emerging development of commercial outposts for scientific and touristic endeavors—the lack of a unified operational framework is as critical as the absence of a universal traffic code in this expansive celestial arena. Each new satellite launch, every space mission, whether for communication, research, or tourism, is like a new building popping up overnight. They add to the vibrancy and capability of our off-Earth endeavors, but also contribute to the congestion and debris that could lead to catastrophic collisions. This deficiency underscores the pressing need for coordinated guidelines that can manage the complexities and dynamics of space activities effectively as in any city, this congestion isn't just about traffic—it's about sustainability. How do we design this sprawling orbital city so that it remains safe, functional, and beneficial for future generations? This is where the conversation turns from challenge to opportunity. The U.S. is paving the way, crafting policies aimed at fostering sustainable practices in space. But this isn't a journey any one nation or company can undertake alone—it's a truly global endeavor. We must advocate for a systematic, globally coordinated approach to manage this new frontier—integrating the innovative spirit of the private sector with the regulatory insights of global governments. Just like city planners, space stakeholders must come together to create guidelines that foster orderly growth, ensuring that space remains a place of opportunity rather than one of chaos. Let’s open up a dialogue on how we can all play a part in this. Whether you're involved in the space industry, a policy maker, or just a fascinated bystander, your voice matters. How do you think we can achieve a sustainable future in space? What roles do interoperability and collaboration play in this grand scheme? Let’s chart this new frontier together!

Thanks to SpaceNews for giving attention to the important issue of space safety and sustainability. While there is widespread support for safety and sustainability, critical gaps remain that we can work together to address. I'm hoping to pick up conversations about this important topic with many of you at #SpaceSymposium this coming week. #39space #spacesafety #spacesustainability https://lnkd.in/d6CJGn8F Together, we can proactively plug space safety gaps With a growing presence in space, we must also have a growing focus on and consideration of space safety and new risks.
