COMMERCIAL UTILISATION FANTASIES FACING HARD REALITY Relying on hypothetical users and the lack of an internationally minded regulatory framework will kill any commercial space station program. "The business model had always counted on having significant power for microgravity research, semiconductor production, and pharmaceutical production, plus supporting life in space," a source told the publication. "The business model had to change… and that has continued to make it challenging for the company to get around its cash flow issues." The other issue is that a regulatory framework based on NASA procurement safety rules (i. e., the one used for the CCP) cannot accommodate a variety of different users onboard a commercial space station (private, institutional, and international). Safety is a characteristic of the system as a whole. A single set of safety requirements and a single certification process is mandatory.
