Alanah Hayes' winning project, "Architecture of Care - Gradual Spatial Transition," is a powerful example of how the 7 Principles of Universal Design can create inclusive, empathetic spaces for everyone. Here’s how she integrated these principles into her award-winning design: - Equitable Use: Alanah’s design prioritizes comfort and enjoyment for everyone. With curved walls, tactile materials, smooth floors, and rest areas, her project ensures spaces cater to individuals with diverse needs, making circulation intuitive and accessible. - Flexibility in Use: Alanah’s strategic structural choices create both large, open areas and smaller alcoves for respite. Folding partitions and curtains empower users to adjust their space, offering autonomy and adaptability based on individual needs. - Perceptible Information: Alanah’s approach to wayfinding is truly inclusive. She designed a building plan in relief near the entrance, complete with a tactile key for different textures, allowing everyone to have a spatial understanding of the building, regardless of visual ability. - Low Physical Effort: The building’s generous circulation space is carefully planned with seating areas and quiet alcoves, giving users places to rest and recharge. How can you go from an empty shell to a workplace that sparks excellence, on a tight budget? Creating a high expectation and self-propelled environment was central to the workplace strategy, to ensure a compelling user experience for the people so to reach the revenue objectives for the business. A raw grind & polish of the existing concrete transitioning to a flowing timber flooring detail. A suspended boardroom as a design showpiece, with curved timber skateboard ramp flowing up to the 5m high ceiling. Ceiling colour treatment to mirror the flowing on the floor transition, created wayfinding design excellence. Chain mesh curtain wall, inspired by NeoCon Design Event in Chicago.
