Wow, a very fast two years recently came to an end with the final EC review of our #WorldFAIR project! 🥂 Fourteen (!) work packages, twenty partners, eleven substantial case studies, 70 published deliverables and milestones, 18,526 (!!) downloads of our work (plus many more views), and - most importantly - a brilliant squad of passionate people from around the globe, working together to understand what data actually are in eleven domains or cross-domain research areas, and to achieve progress towards technical interoperability. I'm grateful to all our colleagues, particularly our EC 'handler' Irina Tiron for her help and wise advice; project coordinator Simon Hodson for ensuring we all kept our vision clear and our standards as high as possible; our brilliant comms/outreach/sustainability lead Alexandra Delipalta and RDA colleagues; and our WP Leads: Leah McEwen at Cornell/IUPAC, Iseult Lynch, Tim Rawling, Alexander Prent, Steven McEachern, Jim Todd and Keith Tomlin of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, Ana Ortigoza, Joe Miller, Debora Drucker, Pier Luigi Buttigieg, Bapon Shm Fakhruddin, PhD, Jill Bolland, Beth Knazook and all their hardworking WP colleagues. We're also very appreciative of the European Commission's WIDERA programme for their support of WorldFAIR's global reach 🙌 Of course the value of these projects is not for the project itself (although we had so much good stuff for our very diligent reviewer!) but to contribute genuine value to the participating domains and cross-domain research areas, and the improvement of data interoperability for the implementation of #FAIR data (join the crowds reading Deliverable 2.3 on the Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework - CDIF - for more on that: https://lnkd.in/eAHs9hmJ ). Yesterday morning on my way to the Palexpo center to attend the annual Swiss IT Forum I stumbled upon a chestnut at the English park (Jardin anglais) next to the Mont Blanc bridge (Pont du Mont-Blanc) at the center of Geneva. In Estonia there's a superstitious belief that chestnuts bring luck. According to Woody Allen 80% of success is granted through showing up. I figured that I'll cover the rest of the 20% using the methods of Harry Potter who at some point took a sip of liquid luck. In my case there was no need to drink anything - one just has to put the chestnut to the pocket and walk ahead. Although I didn't strike gold just yet, I got some pretty inspiring business insights over the past two days. The current buzz words such as AI and cyber-security were covered according to the best Swiss traditions: in a straight to the point and down to earth manner. If I'd have to pick just one presentation it would be from professor Diego Kuonen who basically made it strikingly simple in view of artificial intelligence hype: the hard part of the affair is to have the right data which at the same time is also right. Obtaining the right data which also happens to be right takes place through intention, not by some accident or coincidence. It's dependent on the existence or the absence of organization's data strategy. The latter is expected to be driven by the executives of the organisation and the engineers come to play during the implenentation phase. As always I was struck yet again by the meticulous Swiss approach to every single detail when it comes to organising meetups or anything for that matter. “Are you ready for a changed world image? Forget the doomsday prophecies—the situation might be serious but there’s still hope! Nature’s own smart solutions is the greatest opportunity for our future.” This was written 12 years ago for the exhibition Tipping Points - The World’s Greatest Opportunity that we at Guringo Designstudio designed for Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm. It was funded by Axfoundation, based on the progressive resarch of Stockholm Resilience Centre and Albaeco and had the a very simple target - to unstigmatize the concept of "sustainability". Working with frontrunners like Fredrik Moberg, Christina Schaffer and Johan Rockström was a complete eye-opener for me. It changed my perspective totally and propelled me into working for mitigation ever since. The adressed challenges of the exhibition - Planetary Boundaries and Tipping Points - are now even more relevant than ever, even though the target of the exhibition has been met. Sustainability is a vague, but yet highly valuable word these days. According to science, the challenge today is to overcome the psycological distance of climate impact; how our regional actions today affects people on the other side of the planet - or even harder to grasp - how our actions today affects people of coming generations, dooming them to suffering. We also need to understand that our happiness is not depending on overconsumption of products, experiences and wealth, components of our lifes that instead turn our society into a death spiral of positional utilites and habituation effects, urging us to strive for what the neighbor has as well as getting us more and more used to our unsustainable lifestyle. Maybe it is time for a Tipping Point 2.0?
