🏆Ukrainian team wins the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2023 international hackathon in the category 'Best Use of Data' 👏 On January 23, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced the winners of the 2023 Space Apps Challenge, a competition it has been organizing since 2012. Among the winners was the Ukrainian team 'Storm Prophet'. The challenge aims to engage talented young individuals in solving tasks for the space agency, ranging from software solutions to mechanisms, electrical devices, and experiments in applied chemistry and biology 🧑🔬 Last year, over 58 000 participants worldwide, organized into 8 718 teams, competed in qualifying stages. The Ukrainian stage, held online in October due to the war, led to Storm Prophet being the sole Ukrainian team in the final round. Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) built the Psyche Multi-spectral Imager (PMI), a pair of cameras for the NASA JPL and Arizona State University (ASU) mission to the Main Belt asteroid 16 Psyche. The Psyche spacecraft is on track for Mars gravity assist in May 2026 and arrival at the asteroid in August 2029.  Psyche is the largest metal asteroid, a 140 mile in diameter ball of iron (probably). The “multi” part of multispectral requires eight filters to take pictures in eight different wavelength bands. Since they were selected to look for different iron minerals, some of the bands are in wavelengths the human eye can see in (400 nm to 700 nm) but some are not (700 nm to 1,000 nm). As usual, we tested one of the PMI units by shooting images from our Canyonview Cleanroom. Making a color picture with PMI requires taking three images through three different filters and then compositing them together. With eight different filters to choose from, there are many combinations possible, all but one is what's called “false” color. The image shown here is one that uses the PMI filter band at 1 µm (1,000 nm) for the red channel. As it turns out, vegetation is quite light at 1 µm, so using that band for the red channel makes all the leaves, etc. look bright red. Last month, I participated for my first global hackathon where there were 32 teams to contribute on space tech innovations addressed. Although not being able to get into top 10 best solutions, for me it was about understanding on what it takes to have a vision to involve in these challenges. Overall a great learning curve and experience during the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Space Apps Challenge 2024 - Chicago edition to address real space tech solutions when my team and I were tasked to work on "Seismic Detection Across Solar System project." The core of the project was to design a system that detects the origination of seismic waves through Short-Term Average to Long-Term Average algorithm and machine learning algorithm on predicting the start times of seismic events.

What a privilege to be involved in New Zealand’s first mission to the International Space Station on NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's SpaceX-30 launch! Two months ago, sending my work to space was not something I ever considered. Today, my microfluidic chips are orbiting Earth. I can trace my involvement in this mission directly to a conversation at the 2023 KiwiNet Awards (afterparty). That led to conversations with researchers from University of Canterbury and University of Otago and resulted in this side-side-project with Vanessa Morris, Christoph Goebl, and Sarah Kessans. What a way to top off the last days of my PhD 🚀🚀🚀 #SpaceExploration #Microfluidics #PhD

I'm pleased to inform you that CellD is now responsible for Europe-wide distribution of Synthecon Inc.'s Rotary Cell Culture Systems (RCCS) for 3D cell growth. These are systems that maintain cells in microgravity, enabling them to aggregate easily into spheroids while promoting shear-free exchange of substrates and O2/CO2. The RCCS was originally developed at NASA's Johnson Space Center to simulate microgravity conditions in space. It was based on the principle of cancelling the force of gravity by slow rotation around one or two axes, at a speed proportional to the size of the aggregates. https://lnkd.in/dEy2Ds46
