One of the challenges the Photonics and Semiconductor industry faces is attracting new talent and in particular, capturing young people at secondary school to consider a career in the deep tech sector. So I thought I would reshare an industry interview we did with Nicola Parry one of the PIADS students about her views and experiences on the course, the photonics industry, and being a woman in STEM. https://bit.ly/4ahTE71

🏆 Excited to Share a Milestone: Election to National Academy of Inventors It is a true honor to be elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. For me, the driving force behind scientific exploration has always been the impact it can have on life—not just today, but decades into the future. Technologies that transform our world often emerge from fundamental science conducted years, even generations, earlier. Over the past 25 years, my research has focused on creating tools that accelerate materials and physics discovery, combining scanning probe and electron microscopy with machine learning and artificial intelligence. Whether it’s developing measurement guidelines for nanoscale electric properties, learning physics of ferroelectric domain growth, building one-atom-at-a-time structures using electron beams, or leveraging AI to close the materials discovery loop, the goal has always been to move science from in silico to in materio —turning theory and ML into real-world discoveries at the atomic and nanometer scales. This journey has led me through national labs, academia, and even a stint at Amazon’s moonshot project division. Today, as Weston Fulton Professor at UTK and a Joint Faculty at PNNL, I see immense opportunities for machine learning to reshape experimental science. Together with my colleagues, I aim to scale ML-enabled microscopy and design tools that will unlock the next era of materials and physics discovery. I’m grateful for this recognition and look forward to continuing this journey of innovation and collaboration. To my peers, collaborators, and students—thank you for being part of this effort. Let’s keep building the future together! 🔬🌍✨ Tickle College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Department of Materials Science and Engineering - University of Tennessee, Knoxville UT Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing #Innovation #NAIFellow #MaterialsScience #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #Microscopy #Collaboration #MaterialsDiscovery https://lnkd.in/gxtXBkRZ
